Blackjack! Murder! Revenge! All the elements you’d expect from Bet’s ending are present and correct in Episode 10, “Winner Takes All”, as well as the obligatory Netflix sequel tease (which I’d say the show has more or less earned). It’s all to play for in the finale, with Yumeko finding out more – though crucially not everything – about the precise circumstances of her parents’ death and finally going one-on-one with Kira, but there’s much more going on than just that.

The mysterious “Ray” is just the tip of the iceberg, and the mysterious Kakegurui club might have all been responsible, which means that Yumeko’s revenge plans will need at least another season to fully take shape. But with Kira morphing into an unexpected ally and Michael taking on a slightly more villainous tint given the events at the finale’s climax, the second semester at St. Dominic’s Prep should be one to watch.

Anyway, onto the meat and potatoes.

The Ray Conundrum

The key name in Yumeko’s plot has always been “Ray” since this was who she always believed to have killed her parents. And after the mishap earlier in the season that resulted in the deaths of Blake and Raymond Rowe, the trail had run cold. However, it turns out that Michael is really a legacy student and that his father, Gabriel R. Adams, aka R.A., aka Ray, is the real culprit.

This also carries an additional blow, since Michael’s efforts to “help” Yumeko have really been subtle ways to protect his father, even though his father is a deeply unpleasant mafioso who thinks he’s a failure (a prevailing theme among the Kakegurui club, as we’ll see).

But these chickens really come home to roost at a retreat where the Student Council and the board all get to rub shoulders and exchange catty pleasantries. You know the deal.

A Deadly Game of Blackjack

There’s all sorts going on at the retreat, which is where we really get a sense of the Student Council divorced from the status they enjoy at school. And it’s illuminating, since it becomes clear quite how much dysfunction is really floating around these supposedly “elite” students, from Kira and Riri’s sadistic father pitting them against each other, Mary being overlooked on account of her family status, and Michael’s dad being a creepy weirdo.

Yumeko plans to poison Ray against Michael and Ryan’s wishes, but Kira intervenes and forces Yumeko to drink it instead. However, Yumeko kisses Kira – paying off all that sexual tension – which infects her, too. The pair of them are forced to play a game of blackjack while they rapidly expire from the poison, with their place in the school under threat thanks to Kira’s father setting the stakes. Ironically, it’s Mary who proves her gambling bona fides by winning as the dealer, saving both of them, and a grudging respect is exchanged between Yumeko and Kira.

After both imbibing the antidote and throwing their guts up in the bathroom, Yumeko and Kira form an unlikely partnership. Since Yumeko wants revenge and Kira wants approval from her father that she’ll never get, especially since Riri is willing to go further than she is, they might as well work together to get what they both want, especially with Riri now having been appointed Head of the School Council.

Why Were Yumeko’s Parents Killed?

It’s eventually revealed that Yumeko’s mother and father were killed for stealing a fortune from the Kakegurui club as Bitcoin and have kept it locked up ever since with a digital key that nobody knows the location of. Yumeko struggles with this revelation, since it implies that her parents weren’t just compulsive gamblers but actual thieves, but Ray is pretty confident in the accusation.

It was also Ray who planted the car bomb, but doing so was very much a group Kakegurui club decision, so everyone is culpable. However, Ray is nonetheless the first on Yumeko’s revenge list. Just when it seems like he might have her dead to rights, Kira intervenes by handing Yumeko a poisoned drink with a swizzle sword. When Ray gets physical, Yumeko stabs him in the heart with it and dangles the antidote over him to force him to reveal the full truth.

However, Yumeko gets a bit carried away and destroys the antidote before Ray can reveal everything. With his dying breath, he claims that Yumeko’s mother survived the explosion and has been in hiding ever since, and apparently, only he knows where she is. Yumeko doesn’t have time to dwell on this, though. Kira buys her time to escape, taking the opportunity to pin Ray’s murder on her father, while Ryan spirits Yumeko away. Michael, meanwhile, watches her leave with fury in his eyes, so he’s likely to seek his own revenge in the virtually guaranteed second season.
