So, the sun sets on another season of Virgin River. As expected, the season 7 finale is packed with more twists and turns than the entire season combined, making me, admittedly, angrily committed to Season 8.
The Season 7 finale is focused on three storylines: Jack and Mel’s adoption journey, the long-awaited resolution for Brie and Brady, and Doc and Hope’s fractured fight for the soul of the town.
Jack and Mel’s Adoption
As the season developed, Jack and Mel were finally chosen to be the parents of Marley’s adopted baby. It was predictable, yes, but undeniably sentimental. However, Virgin River never lets a moment of peace go unpunished. While Jack, Mel, and Marley attend the Founders Celebration, Marley begins to struggle to breathe and is rushed for an ultrasound.
Here is where the writing gets particularly pointed. Hope has spent the entire season hosting this Founders Celebration with one agenda: reminding the town to protect itself from the corporate conglomerate that threatens to strip Virgin River of its authenticity.
The “link” is the severity of Marley’s pregnancy issues. Doc and Mel reveal that Marley has Polyhydramnios, a condition that, in Doc’s words, “sometimes means something is going on with the baby.” To discover the truth, they need advanced equipment and the kind only the “conglomerate hospital” can provide.
By the end of the episode, Marley gives birth to a beautiful baby who is immediately rushed off for intensive care. And, of course, that’s when the credits roll. I couldn’t help but grunt; I now have to wait a year just for the baby to predictably survive. There is simply no way Jack and Mel won’t get their happy ending, but the show insists on making us sweat for it.
Doc and Hope – A House Divided
Hope excitedly greets Doc after her “successful” Founders Day, proud that the town signed her petition to keep Grace Valley out of their neck of the woods. For ten episodes, this has been her loyal mission.
However, the mood shifts instantly when Doc shares his day. After working with the Grace Valley team during the medical emergency, he has changed his beliefs. He now thinks the hospital belongs in Virgin River. Hope is devastated.
In the fallout, Hope leaves the house to visit Rowland, her ex-husband. She asks him a haunting question: why has this happened to her three times now? Rowland provides a rare moment of resolution, helping her understand what went wrong between them and her father. Together, they release her father’s ashes in a moment of closure.
Meanwhile, Doc packs a bag and heads to the clinic, where Hope told him to spend the night. We leave them in separate places, away from each other. A conclusion I found both distasteful and unimpressive for the show’s core couple.
Brady and Brie – Will They Ever Make It?
After all the frustration of previous seasons, we finally got what we wanted: Brady and Brie are back together! I actually breathed a sigh of relief. How naive I was to believe it would be that simple.
They enjoy a brief moment of happiness before the Virgin River writers intervene. As Jack and Mel’s baby is rushed to the ICU, we see Brady happily finishing work on his motorcycle. He takes it out for a ride, and we’re treated to a nostalgic flashback of him riding with Brie. It was a sweet reminder of their history, which, in this show, is the universal signal that something terrible is about to happen.
Sure enough, lost in his daydream of Brie, Brady fails to notice the roadworks ahead. He swerves, loses control, and flies off his bike. We don’t yet know the severity of his injuries, but he’s heading to the hospital.
Another Frustrating Finale
This will always be my main grievance with Virgin River: not every single story needs to be left on a massive cliffhanger, especially when the rest of the season feels like “mid-stories.” To have all three primary couples perched on a life-altering ledge at the same time is ludicrous.
And yet, here I am, waiting for Season 8.
