Summary

I Will Find You delivers a few more unexpected swerves, pointing an accusatory finger in a more interesting direction and finally producing some emotional sentiment, albeit from an unlikely place.

Just when it seemed like I Will Find You was becoming a bit too uninteresting and obvious, Episode 6 throws in a few curveballs. Sure, the idea of Nicky Fisher not being the Big Bad is good news, but it isn’t like we didn’t already suspect Gertrude, who has been lurking in the background like the real villain of the piece for quite some time. There are definitely still a few missing pieces, but the mystery has a fairly clear shape now, and the revelation that petty organised crime vengeance isn’t the underlying motive can only be a good thing.

Just like in the previous episode, a flashback kicks things off. This one takes place ten years in the past and finds Nicky Fisher identifying the body of his son, Liam, who was killed in prison. It’s a nice segue from where we last saw David, waking up in Key West, Florida. Nicky would like a chat, and given his son’s fate, it stands to reason it won’t be a positive one.

Nicky obviously loved Liam, since he constructed a ridiculous Neverland-style beachfront funfair in his memory, which is where he has been holding Lenny since he was snatched at the end of Episode 4. It’s also where he takes David and explains to him that Liam was convicted on the back of phony evidence manufactured by Philip and Lenny. Liam killed someone in a bar fight, but Nicky frightened the witnesses into not talking. He would have got off, but Lenny and Philip made sure he didn’t. Now, he’s willing to offer Matthew’s life in exchange for Lenny’s. Fair’s fair.

Lenny thinks this is a good idea, since he’s not going to survive the cancer anyway, and this would be a good way to atone for any mistakes made in the past. Adam is less keen on the plan, and pulls his own gun to try and stop it. Nicky also explains that Adam became his inside man in the Boston PD after he volunteered himself in exchange for Nicky calling off the hit he put out on Lenny and Philip. It was always to protect the family. But there’s nothing he can do to stop this situation, since he’s badly outnumbered. Eventually, David agrees to sacrifice Lenny for Matthew, which is good enough for Nicky. All of this was just a test. Nicky doesn’t have Matthew, never did, but he needed to know that David believed he was alive. He wouldn’t have chosen to sacrifice his dad’s life if he didn’t.

But if Nicky isn’t responsible, who is? He offers some genuinely sage advice to David, which is to look into not only his own past but also Cheryl’s. What’s lurking there that might give someone a reason to do this? David is free to go, but Lenny is staying behind as an insurance policy in case all of this is bogus. Once he’s on the plane, he calls Rachel and tells her that Matthew might not be his son. It’s clear he’s thinking about something quite specific on Cheryl’s side of the aisle.

Speaking of Cheryl, she stops in to see Rachel, who is being babysat by a Boston PD patrolman while trying to track down the three Six Flags photographs she’s still missing, and tells her she’s determined to do something to help find Matthew. To this end, she drops by to see Sophie and Philip with a lock of Matthew’s hair, preserved from his first haircut. Philip can pull some strings and get the DNA checked against what’s on file from the case. If they can prove that the body found that night wasn’t Matthew’s, that will go some way towards proving that Matthew is alive.

While we’re on the subject of who’s alive and who isn’t, Williams pulls through after being shot by Skunk. Greer, however, gets benched by D’Souza under the guise of standard protocol, though it’s probably not a coincidence that this is happening right after D’Souza met with Gertrude. I Will Find You Episode 6 finally manages to summon some earnest emotional sentiment, but it comes from Greer and Williams, which is probably not a great sign in a show about a father wrongly convicted of murdering his own son. But you don’t hire Sam Worthington for nuanced emotional performances; Chi McBride, though, turns out to be a font of compelling drama.

Despite being officially off the case, Greer is still in contact with Detective Muller, who is on his way to Boston with information about Matthew, and Chopra hooks her up with the file on Martin, the kid from Geneva. Greer and Williams are on the right track, but they’re now lacking the official support to do anything about it.

Things really kick into gear when Detective Stavros, Gertrude’s pet assassin, breaks into Rachel’s place with a silenced handgun to try and take her out. Luckily, Hayden is on his way, so Rachel is able to use a bit of quick-thinking to summon the patrolman — and get him killed — and escape. Hayden’s car is spotted by CCTV, though, and he raises a few valid points that anyone who’s willing to shoot a cop dead is obviously a serious individual who isn’t going to take no for an answer. Rachel’s being hunted, and she needs to be careful.

Stavros uses his credentials to blame David for the death of the patrolman, creating an even bigger frenzy just in time for him to arrive back in Boston and explain what he meant earlier about Matthew potentially not being his son. Apparently, Cheryl went to a fertility clinic behind his back when they were struggling to conceive. Now, Matthew thinks that the donor might have come to reclaim his child. The clinic Cheryl went to was Berg Reproductive, which conveniently happens to be part of the Payne Medical Group. Hayden gets them inside and looks through the system, but Cheryl doesn’t have a file. However, a doctor was fired from the clinic for impregnating his own patients, and Gertrude covered it up. His name is Jacob Heller, and he now works at the hospital with Cheryl.

Suddenly, the police arrive, and Hayden turns himself in to buy Rachel and David time to escape. We also see Heller find Stavros in his office, who tells him that he needs to leave, since Gertrude can no longer protect him. We seem to be getting pretty close to the truth.
