WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS

The Season 1 finale of Not Suitable for Work set up a mix of workplace drama, unrequited love, and shifting relationship dynamics for Season 2. The New Year’s Eve cliffhangers were messy, but they provided a clear lead-in for a continuation.

The Fallout of the AJ / Davis / Josh Love Triangle

Firstly, the finale completely upends the romantic dynamics. AJ and Davis finally share a kiss after he defends her honor (and gets fired for it). Season 2 will likely explore whether this impulsive kiss turns into something real, like a relationship — especially since Davis has been pining for her all season.

Then there’s Josh’s heartbreak. He arrives at his (clearly platonic) date with AJ all dressed up and holding wine, only to see her kissing Davis. Because Josh has real feelings for AJ, Season 2 may deal with his resentment and their now-strained friendship. It will also certainly bring increased awkwardness to the office now that Davis has been fired. Eesh!

Davis’s Career Reboot

Speaking of dismissals, Davis went out in a blaze of glory after confronting Bill about how he treated AJ, which led to a rather petty office brawl. In the process, he was called a “cuck” and ultimately terminated.

Because video of the office fight leaked, Davis is now unemployed and viral. Season 2 could follow his new job hunt. Will AJ help him find a new gig? Will he find a way to get revenge on Bill?

“Too Little, Too Late” for Abby and Kel

We all love “the one that got away” storylines, and Abby is really going through it at the end of Season 1. She finally got her act together, apologized to Kel, and showed up at his cast party to tell him she’s interested in him. Unfortunately, this backfired, as Kel had already moved on with a co-star.

Season 2 could see those roles reversed. Kel may thrive in his new acting role and love interest, leaving Abby to pine for him from the sidelines. Abby is also dealing with being rehired by Vanessa, who has historically treated her badly. In Season 2, will she look to move past working for someone else, pay off her debts, and navigate her feelings for Kel? It feels like things could only get messier from here.

Rising Star(s)

As for Josh, he spent the finale saving his boss, Wes Dryden, by pulling strings to get him a spot on a major pop-culture show and feeding him answers via a teleprompter to make him look good. In Season 2, Josh could leverage the fact that he is the brains behind Wes’s sudden career boost. The storyline could see him demanding more recognition and a promotion from Paula.

The Former Students

Finally, what about the emotional high point of Kel’s storyline, where his former students showed up to support his show after he was fired from teaching? Will Season 2 find a way to weave those characters (specifically Beth) back into the script? Perhaps they could help Kel form a new side hustle if his acting gigs dry up.

Not Suitable for Work was clearly set up for a second season. If it gets greenlit, the writers will have a lot of work to do to flesh out these storylines, but the multiple cliffhangers are compelling enough to give it a run.
