You can tell that Chambers Episode 1, “Into the Void”, is a teaser of what’s to come. The atmospheric style is immediately daunting, introducing us to the world of the young and in love Sasha (Sivan Alyra Rose), who lives with her Uncle Frank (Marcus LaVoi). The opening conveniently gives a thunderstorm to highlight the eeriness. Sasha is heading out and tells her Uncle she is studying, but that is a smokescreen; she has organized to lose her virginity to TJ (Griffin Powell-Arcand).
And that’s where “Into the Void” sells the premise; while getting hot and sweaty, she experiences a freak heart attack. In the next scene, you see scars all over her body, as she applies cream tenderly. Sasha has had a heart transplant.
After experiencing the usual day at high school, with kids calling her Frankenstein, her best friend Yvonne (Kyanna Simone Simpson) having to defend her, and her boyfriend becoming soft and protective, the donor’s father Ben Lefevre (Tony Goldwyn), invites her and the Uncle for dinner. With the horror-like setting, you know something is not right, especially when Sasha decides to rest, and she sees Becky (Lilliya Scarlett Reid), the donor, smiling at her.
Life gets creepier for Sasha in “Into the Void”, with a random crazy old lady screaming, “you don’t want her in you!”. But at dinner, it’s clear that this family is invasive, and they want to apply an element of control with the riches they have. Becky’s mother Nancy (Uma Thurman) is clearly beside herself emotionally, giving Sasha an overlong hug, the father is too eager, and the brother has his self-entitled issues.
The Lefevre’s offer scholarship to Sasha, endowed in Becky’s name. With Sasha wanting to shoot off, a dust storm hits, meaning they have to stay at the house. Uncle Frank is inspired by their riches and begs Sasha to take the opportunity. Sasha scours the house; finds a mouse that has no tail, and then finds a hidden camera. The same night, while sleeping, she has a dream of Becky having sex in a car.
Despite her uneasiness of the situation, Sasha seems to be more level with her new heart, losing her virginity to TJ and then accepts the scholarship at Crystal Valley High. You couldn’t blame her, it’s an exclusive Scholarship package with great benefits, but the invasive nature of her acquiring a heart transplant gets more profound, with her mentor being Marnie (Sarah Mezzanotte), who used to be Becky’s friend. She reveals that Becky died electrocuted in the shower by a fallen radio.
“Into the Void” ends with her friend Yvonne revealing the biological science that you cannot place a deceased heart on the transplant register if that person was electrocuted. So, the question is – how did Becky die? As the credits get closer, Sasha sees Becky in the mirror, screaming. Episode 1 was a satisfying start to Chambers, with some jumpy scenes for good measure.
