The more that Orange Is the New Black season 7 progresses, the more you realise that it is a big F*** you to the current American administration. Episode 5 is an important message.

But before I get into that, let’s discuss Piper and her continuous adjustment to the outside world. Episode 5, ‘Minority Deport’ sees the character wanting fun and asking her friend Cal for a big blow out where they forget their responsibilities. They have a day session of drinks and drugs, but unfortunately the next day her probation officer suspects her urine is off. She gives her the low-down of how close she is to going back to prison. The issue with Piper in every season is that she had a spoilt upbringing and her willingness to mess up her healthy life of freedom (with certain limitations of being a felon) is indicative of her personality since the start of the series.

The focal point of episode 5, “Minority Deport” is Aleida, who is struggling with her wild daughter, who is giving her repetitive attitude. In an attempt to show her the dark side of life, she visits Daya and asks her to tell her daughter what it’s like to be in prison — this backfires as Daya rips into Aleida, revealing that she is not perfect. Flashbacks reveal that Aleida had a fractured relationship with her mum growing up; surrounded by a world of men and becoming used to getting paid for sex by someone three times her age. Her daughter is following the same footsteps — a wild life.

In terms of the ICE Detention Centre; Blanca is taken to a hearing, and learns some tricks regarding the legal process and demands that she is allowed a lawyer to assert her rights — the judge accepts her request, buying her more time. “Minority Deport” is a refreshing chapter because it highlights the court process for immigrants, and although it is fictional, it adds to the knowledge of the crippling system that breaks up families in cruel circumstances.

In the kitchen, Red is becoming more and more forgetful on essential recipes, and her frustration grows, taking it out on Nicky. At this point, it’s difficult to understand if Red’s forgetfulness is linked to a disease or born from trauma from spending so much time in solitary confinement.

As Orange Is the New Black season 7, episode 5, “Minority Deport” ends, Aleida loses her s*** and attacks her daughter’s boyfriend and aggressively makes a commotion in the area. She is in the back of a police car by the end of the chapter, sobbing — she has created her downfall yet again. As for Maritza; she went to her hearing and never returned as she did not have the legal know-how. The chapter ends with a scene defining shot of the young woman sitting on a plane ready to be deported back to Colombia — a country she has never been to.

Warden’s Notes

  • Tasha has approached Warden Tamika about being her assistance; however, her real plan is to be the eyes and ears of Daya. Information is payment so she can get the drugs off Daya to OD.
