Summary
“Rat Park” serves some important, well-known messages – mothers are amazing.
We all cope in different ways when we take on a significant life change, but drinking while looking after your children is probably not the best way of going about things. For Barb, she’s having no rest, so even a glass of wine while reading her children a bedtime story feels like multitasking, but when she is randomly asked for a breathalyser test while on the road with the kids in the back, something has to change. The Letdown Season 2, Episode 5 brings some reality to the fold.
Audrey is concerned, so she relies on her reformed drug dealer friend in “Rat Park,” who gives Barb some hard advice about how to reduce her coping mechanism, which is alcohol. Barb claims she is not an alcoholic, but it’s just her wish to have a glass at the end of the day.
As for Ester, she’s struggling with her age and identity. She’s becoming paranoid about what other’s think of her. When she takes on an intern who gives her a confidence boost, she realises loads of women would kill to have her world; a child and a thriving career. The intern states that she is “living proof that you can have it all at the same time”. She does highlight that she misses key moments with her child.
But if anything, Season 2, Episode 5, teaches us that mothers are incredible, and whilst we already knew that, the Netflix series does well in forming a story around that message. It’s okay to have a bad day, parenting and juggling other elements in your life is hard.
