After the conclusion of the last episode, Grace Rasmussen (Toni Collette) and Karen Duvall (Merritt Wever) have an unusual predicament. They learn that Christopher McCarthy and his brother both live in the house. Either of them could have been driving the vehicle that links to the crime the night Amber was raped. The entire season of Unbelievable has seen the detectives desperate for one prime suspect, but now they have two. It’s oddly ironic.
The police and Grace and her partner also ponder on the possibility that the brothers were a team, but Grace denies that theory; the rapist has been too detailed, systematic and careful for it to be a team. It’s one of them.
Intern Elias provides vital data again, drawing out a timeline to the nights of the multiple rapes and looking at Facebook data to conjure any possible alibis. Looking at the timeline, Christopher’s brother does not appear to be near the locations the night the rapes happened, leaving Christopher as the lead suspect.
Meanwhile, Marie, who has to take mandated counselling sessions, sits down with her new counsellor. Marie opts to be silent through the session but realises how boring an hour can be when there’s nothing to do. The counsellor decides to have a general talk, and they discuss films. Marie talks about zombies and how you have to assume everyone is an enemy to survive. Eventually, the counsellor makes a break in the conversation, stating that regardless if Marie was raped or not, she was violated. Marie opens up about what happened, and the counsellor listens and asks her what she would do if she had to discuss her story all over again. Marie goes into a long monologue about how the truth is inconvenient. It’s a sad moment but also a breakthrough for the first time since the first Episode.
Finally, Grace and Karen get the ID and evidence to arrest Christopher — they also arrest his brother too for questioning just in case he was complicit in the crimes. In a beautiful moment, Grace purposefully gives Karen the gift of arresting Christopher. The two have bonded immensely, but Grace knew this was a massive deal for Karen, who had regrets over previous cases in the past. Grace knew Karen needed this victory.
When the arrest happens, it’s strange how normal it all was but the major moment is when Karen finds the birthmark on Chris’s left calf. Inside the house there are knickers hidden inside an amp box — trophies. Karen spends a long time in the house, taking it all in, and ensuring as much evidence is gathered as possible.
Unbelievable Season 1, Episode 7 ends with Grace and Karen looking through the evidence of all the women involved, and then they come across Marie in one of Christopher’s photos…
