With Astrid’s (Lucy Boynton) disappearance, her father tells the police that he thinks Payton (Ben Platt) is involved in this. He bribes the police and asks them to look into Payton.
And while this is unbeknown to Payton, Episode 4, “Gone Girl” sees the aspiring politician needing an answer to his dwindling polls. He needs a new running Vice-President.
His campaign is halted though, as he soon becomes the person of interest in Astrid’s disappearance. He rightly denies involvement, but some witnesses overheard him say he was going to kill Astrid in a cafe. It’s scandal after scandal in The Politician.
There’s another twist; while Payton is put in a boot and asked to hide out at his family’s, Ricardo and Astrid are hiding out in a motel having loads of sex. Astrid dreams of having a new life touring the country with Ricardo and starting anew. Ricardo, however, is still strung up about Infinity.
Payton’s hideout provides a compelling scene; he explains to his mother how fascinated he is about becoming a President, and Georgina cries; she knows what person she has to become to make her son’s dreams come true.
In a moment of clarity and trauma for Infinity, Payton tells Infinity that she has Munchausen by proxy put on by her Nana and that she will no longer be Vice-President in his campaign. Infinity is upset, and denies it, but then Payton hits her with the blood results. In the next scene, Infinity has a blowout argument with her Nana in a restaurant. Infinity takes back her control, in one of the best scenes of the series so far.
The initial buzz of running away from home starts to lose momentum with Astrid. Ricardo tells her that she can win the election, and he leaves her in the motel. Meanwhile, Alice does a polygraph test to prove Payton was with her that night — the twist is she wasn’t with Payton, but she found a way to cheat the test, using a range of psychology to overcome the variables.
Astrid finally returns home in Episode 4 and argues with her mother about what she wants. Astrid makes a local TV speech, which is an excellent apologetic speech, but unfortunately, the polls swing back to Payton.
The Politician Season 1 Episode 4, “Gone Girl” ends with Skye asking Payton’s campaign team if she can be the new Vice-President.
