The opening part of Episode 2 is shocking. You hear rumours about ICE, their aggressive stance and the horrific living conditions they impose, but there was always a tiny inkling that maybe it was slightly exaggerated for the purpose of the media. At the start of “The World Is Watching”, Luis goes to meet his girlfriend and her son, but ICE goes against their promise of allowing his girlfriend into the parking lot to say goodbye.

ICE insists that Luis comes into the lobby with his son. His attorney is sceptical, attempting to get assurances that nothing will happen to him. The deportation guard comes outside and forcefully ushers Luis inside. As his attorney tries to enter the building to legally assist, the deportation guard throws her to the pavement, causing her injuries.

I was gobsmacked. These are human lives we are talking about and in 2019 America, ICE staff believe they have the authority to assault attornies, and confidently — the camera was on him. ICE trapped Luis and he has no idea when he will be released again.

As for Ron and Karen, their Israel-born daughter, Bar, gets DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) status, which protects her from deportation for two years. However, the documentary points out that Barack Obama introduced this legalisation to protect immigrant children, but it has since been removed. The anxiety placed on Bar and her family is saddening. She has no recollection of what Israel is like — Bar was a newborn when they left.

At the end of the episode, we learn Ron’s mother died — he couldn’t go to the funeral; travelling back was too high risk.

As for Alejandra, her appeals continue to be denied and concerns are growing that she will be deported to Mexico. A senator kindly tries to impose a bill to prevent her deportation, but even that does not muster any consideration from the ruthless immigration system.

Living Undocumented Season 1, Episode 2, “The World Is Watching” continues the eye-opening sad state of affairs.
