Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 3, Episode 2 opens up with Nick in the dungeon; Sabrina checks on him and realizes he is currently Lucifer. She tells Lucifer that he is surrounded by Damascus steel and salt and promises Nick she will get Lucifer out of him.
“Chapter Twenty-Two: Drag Me to Hell” sees Sabrina try out a new hobby and also carry out a new, disturbing duty that she was not expecting to do. Episode 2 sees Sabrina face the consequences of taking the crown, with the writers managing to make it Buffy-esque as she tries to balance her imbalanced life.
Sabrina tries out cheerleading in this episode and seems to have picked it up, with “Chapter Twenty-Two: Drag Me to Hell” giving us a musical number. Sabrina looks relieved to do something normal but as an audience member, you know this will not last.
And it doesn’t; Lilith has returned to Earth to be Sabrina’s regent. Sabrina’s new duty as Queen of Hell involves dragging souls into Hell. Her first victim is Robert Robertson — he wanted to be the greatest chess master in the world and he sold his soul in order to achieve this. Sabrina feels guilty, allowing him to enter the white car (Heaven). Sabrina is summoned to Hell — the Infernal Kings are annoyed and do not think she is up to the task. The next person on the list is Jimmy Platt.
It’s quite obvious Sabrina is not up to the task; she has empathy — the writers are teasing how Sabrina may rejig the way Hell works.
Sabrina tells her friends about her new duties and references the ice cream truck driver Jimmy Platt – they wonder what he has done wrong to deserve Hell. Sabrina plans on using soul transference, use Jimmy’s corpse and trap Lucifer. We find out that Jimmy was sacrificing children for years to give himself life extensions with Lucifer. Jimmy blackmails Sabrina, explaining that she will not be able to find the missing child if he sends him to Hell. When Sabrina speaks to Lucifer about his deals with Jimmy, he insists she must carry out her role as Queen.
Lucifer is extremely desperate to mould Sabrina into something she is not.
Sabrina, Roz, and Theo meet the missing child’s (Lucy) mother to find out clues to where she is. Roz is hit with visions of a freezer when she touches a pinwheel made by Lucy. They take the pinwheel and use it to communicate with Lucy. Sabrina dangerously teleports to Lucy to save her and Jimmy is fully aware and tells Sabrina she will be unable to teleport out of the freezer. Sabrina and Lucy are trapped in the freezer. Lilith, who is under pressure from Hell to ensure Sabrina carries out her duties, saves Sabrina and Lucy from the freezer and returns the girl to Lucy’s mother.
It’s pretty obvious that Sabrina is still a reckless character at times, even when she has the leverage.
Moving to Prudence and Ambrose; Ambrose promises Prudence that she will get blood and have the ability to kill Blackwood. The pair find Blackwood in Scotland performing a ritual. They see children with him and realize they need saving. Blackwood blurts on how he has been in the current location for 15 years and for them it feels like a month he has been missing; then states, “The old ones are returning to claim the earth”. Blackwood asks Ambrose to return the egg that he has taken from him and Prudence knocks Blackwood out.
At this stage, we’ve no idea what the “old ones” are, but it does not sound good.
Prudence is frustrated that Ambrose is not ready to kill Blackwood. Ambrose explains that Blackwood speaking of the Eldritch terrors and the egg is making him curious and he wants to understand what he is doing. As Prudence is about to kill Blackwood, the children scream “Don’t kill our father”. Prudence recognizes the children as Judith and Leticia. Ambrose mumbles about the “magick” of time and space.
It’s safe to say that this is getting a whole lot more complicated than Season 2 already. It’s also useful to know that Blackwood was sporting a heavy beard, meaning the time and space theory could be in fact true.
Before we reach the ending of Episode 2 of Season 3, Zelda is feeling like she is being mocked by the students at school but it turns out Lucifer is getting revenge for using Lilith in her prayers. There are bugs skirting around the place turning students on each other. Lucifer’s influence reaches its peak when Zelda ends up slapping one of the students and Hilda catches her. Zelda believes the Dark Lord is afoot.
I find it bizarre that Lucifer is able to do such damage despite being trapped at this point — it goes to show the power that he holds.
As we reach the end of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 3, Episode 2, cheerleading practice is in full swing. The plan to send Jimmy back to Hell is still on. Sabrina grabs him at his ice cream truck and sends him to Hell. The Infernal Kings say her actions prove nothing but Sabrina looks motivated — “Hell needs a makeover, fellas”.
The audience is witnessing a reformation of Hell.
Sabrina returns home to Zelda and Hilda who are fuming. They ask about the Dark Lord and her recklessness to save Nick. The aunties ask Sabrina who they plan to transfer Lucifer’s soul in to. Sabrina insists she had to save Nick and as she says that, Ambrose and Prudence turn up with Father Blackwood and the children. Sabrina has a body she can perform soul transference with now. A plan clumsily put together.
Blackwood and Lucifer are reunited and the soul transference is performed. Judith and Leticia are introduced to their new rooms, but it’s actually a living doll spell — they are in a toy house; Ambrose explains that they won’t feel hunger, pain or time. He plans to wait and see if the egg hatches.
Near the end, Father Blackwood speaks of the Eldritch terror to Lucifer. Sabrina kisses Nick and he wakes up. While out with Roz celebrating another success, Harvey sees a carnival in the distance and we hear a voice-over from Blackwood — “The old ones are returning to reclaim the Earth”
It’s abundantly clear that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 3, Episode 2, “Chapter Twenty-Two: Drag Me to Hell”, is hinting of a higher being than what we’ve become accustomed to in the story so far.
