Manuel is trying to get a grip on the economy in Episode 3 and it makes for an enticing chapter. He tells one of Leyras men that he wants to meet the brothers and threatens them with violent words. They head out to see the brothers and Manuel makes it known that they are not dominating in the marketplace as much as they should be and they should consider retail rather than wholesale. The Leyras brothers aren’t forthcoming at first, with guns held at each other — Manuel insists that they work together.
Episode 3 also sees Chris realizing he has a problem with the ship but it takes him a while to realize the true extent of what’s happening around him. After agreeing on route recommendations, he checks out the engine room of the ship. He tells the captain that there is oil everywhere and the cylinders are loose. Chris checks the CCTV and notices someone with tools in the engine basement loosening the cylinders. He confronts this crew member — Vermito — and asks why he is trying to start an engine fire and gets angry. When Chris alerts the captain, surprisingly, the captain knocks Chris out cold.
Chris seems to get knocked out frequently.
When he wakes up, it is mayhem; Chris hears the ship fire alarm and sees that it is indeed on fire — he manages to escape the room he is in and he heads to the basement to let off the fire emergency systems to try and stop the fire. As the lights go out, he grabs a gas mask and inspects the damage. The captain who had betrayed him has already departed on the lifeboats.
We then get a brief flashback in ZeroZeroZero Season 1, Episode 3, of the captain of the ship meeting Stefano. The captain is asked why he does not quit his job and Stefano offers him a lucrative money package and in return, he wants the captain to make sure the ship never gets to Gioia Tauro. The captain feels sad about taking the deal, stating that Edward Lynwood was his friend.
Goes to show loyalty can sometimes get you nowhere.
In Reggio Calabria, Italy, Stefano is at home with his wife and son until he gets visitors. Apparently, his grandpa Don Minu wants to see him. There is tension in the air, and the wife immediately feels it — she sneaks a phone in her husband’s jacket before he sets off with Don Minu’s men. When he meets Don Minu, he is asked about the shipment and Emma. Stefano tries to blag the situation. Don Minu claims to know more than him — they head out to the pigsty, and one of Don Minu’s friends slaughters a pig. They all take it in turns to drink the pig’s blood.
This is not my idea of a good night out. But this scene is here to demonstrate how much the tension is peaking with Stefano downing the pig’s blood to hide his nervousness.
Don Minu insists that the shipment is in transit and it must arrive; if it doesn’t, his enemies have won.
As the tensions continue to heighten, Stefano heads to the bathroom and secretly rings his wife with the secret phone that was planted — he gives away his location so he can be picked up. However, Stefano’s plans go wrong as his grandpa decides to move location. While in the car, one of Don Minu’s men asks Stefano for his phone — they know what he was up to.
We then get a glimpse to why Stefano hates his grandpa so much; Don Minu goes into a rant, blaming Stefano’s father for starting the last war and that’s why he had to make the hard choices — Stefano is angry and upset but Don Minu says he had to kill his father, even though heartbreaking for the family.
Don Minu takes Stefano to a broken down car with Nicola inside crying his eyes out. Don Minu’s men throw petrol all over the car and Stefano has to watch him burn to death. Don Minu announces that he will win this war — “I don’t want to do to you what I once did to your father.” Cold words from Don Minu, suggesting Stefano is on his last life.
ZeroZeroZero Season 1, Episode 3 ends in the middle of the night; Don Minu’s place is ambushed by Stefano’s men. Stefano helps Don Minu escape but then he has to shoot himself in the arm so it looks like he did not help. He tells his men that Nicola was murdered.
