The King: Eternal Monarch recaps

How does The King: Eternal Monarch season 1, episode 5 begin?

To get things started, Episode 5 was is quite a baseless episode in that nothing really happens.

It begins with Lee Gon showing Tae-eul a place where time works differently but he states the fact that he wants to show her his world. Jo Yeong instantly has a problem with her, with trust issues spilling over. Tae-eul grabs a gun and points it at Jo Yeong and Lee Gon to prove she can handle herself and asks if this world is real.

Jo Yeong has a sudden realisation that the woman he is facing is Tae-eul — the one Lee Gon had been trying to find for years. Lee Gon gives Tae-eul her own room in the palace.

How does Tae-eul handle the new world?

Tae-eul takes her time to adjust to the palace, highlighting differences to Na-ri of both worlds. Tae-eul clearly does not understand royal procedures, constantly breaking them.

Jo Yeong takes Tae-eul’s fingerprints and checks up on her. He asks Lee Gon about the parallel Universe.

Lady Noh tells Tae-eul the story of the ID and how there is no Lieutenants in their world and they could not find a “Tae-eul”. She warns Tae-eul not to try stay in “this world”, and that includes the King. Lee Gon keeps trying to make her feel at home.

I’m calling it now — the woman who saved Lee Gon’s life is the Tae-eul we are witnessing now. She came from the future which is why they cannot find another Lieutenant Tae-eul.

So that rules out any romance?

No, there’s still romance. Tae-eul asks him if he’s ever dated before and hints that they are dating now. Lee Gon kisses her. The next day, he tries to deliver her clothes and Lady Noh warns them both. Lee Gon then flies off to carry out his royal duties.

How does The King: Eternal Monarch season 1, episode 5 end?

For most of the episode, Tae-eul explores the parallel world, visiting different places and trying to see parallel versions of her friends and colleagues. But when she tries to return to the palace, she has run out of money. When Lee Gon hears she is low on money, he asks the helicopter to detour to Seoul so they can help her.

Prime Minister Koo then shows up after hearing of the helicopter. She introduces herself to Tae-eul and Lee Gon finds it awkward.

The King: Eternal Monarch season 1, episode 5 is a little lifeless but hopefully that means it is leading to a more dramatic next chapter.
