How does The Woods season 1, episode 3, “You Know Nothing” open?
Episode 3 opens up in the past, with the investigator asking Principal Dawid Goldsztajn what he’s done to the students. In the present day, Pawel and Laura meet after many years. She shows Pawel the very familiar essay. Pawel shows Laura the case of Marek Kowalski and states it is Artur. They come to the conclusion that if Artur was alive all this time, his sister could be as well.
Anti-semitism
In the past, Pawel’s parent argues about the disappearance of Kamila. The father hints that Kamila was her favourite and Pawel overhears. Meanwhile, Dawid Goldsztajn continues to receive anti-Semitic slurs. Laura wants to leave but Pawel tries convincing her to stay but she’s evidently traumatized and they end up embracing. They agree to meet the next day. In the present, Pawel tells Laura that he knows she is married — the flame between them is obviously there. Laura apologizes to Pawel about his wife and they both tell each other that it’s good to see each other again.
In the present, Pawel and his family are slowly being torn apart by the tragic events. At school, Karol tells Pawel that Dawid Goldsztajn did it because he’s a jew; Pawel and Karol have a brief scuffle. The Woods season 1, episode 3, “You Know Nothing” shows how anti-Semitic behavior can ruin someone’s life and can throw doubts at someone’s character.
Funeral
In the next scene, it is the funeral and Dawid Goldsztajn shows up with Laura. There’s some tension in the air. Laura comforts her father and persuades him to leave. Meanwhile, Pawel’s family have a sit-down meeting. The father states the uncertainty is terrible and asks Pawel if Kamila was the best sister in the Universe. Pawel gets angry, realizing his parents aren’t considering his feelings and asks his mother why she keeps heading over to the Goldsztajn’s. His mother comes into his room and promises to never leave him. The Woods season 1, episode 3, “You Know Nothing” shows obvious broken promises and you can tell why Pawel was impacted by all of this — his parents did not support him.
Civil suits
Dawid Goldsztajn has received civil suits from all the parents, claiming negligence — they are making him the scapegoat. He sobs uncontrollably. Laura asks him to calm down, realizing the severity of their situation. In the present day, Dawid Goldsztajn is holding a drawing; he won’t let go and he becomes very frustrated and attacks the nurse. He’s homed at a facility.
We should have stayed in the woods
Laura visits the facility and they tell her Dawid is showing hyperirritability. Laura asks about the incident but he brushes it off. She brings up how she met Pawel recently and that he needs photos from the camp as she’d like to help. Dawid Goldsztajn asks where was his help “back then” before showing her where the box of photos is. Dawid Goldsztajn suddenly gets irritated, stating they should have stayed in the woods and Laura calms him down. On the way out, Laura sees Marek Kowalski in the visitor book and rings Pawel to tell him. The Woods season 1, episode 3, “You Know Nothing” is trying to thicken the plot and it’s doing a good job of it.
I need a witness
Pawel tells his boss that he has a witness for the rape case after she puts pressure on him — she knows that the accused’s father is a journalist. He doesn’t really need a witness, he needs to find one. When he leaves the office, he sees that someone has been following him.
Where is your wedding ring
When Laura returns home, her partner Leon asks about Pawel but she brushes it off; Laura says she has a big workload and needs to go to the University on Saturday and Leon states he’ll join her. He states he is joking and asks why she isn’t wearing her wedding ring. Laura and Pawel meet Artur’s parents. They keep their stance that the dead man is not Artur and then they learn who Laura is. Pawel and Laura swiftly leave. Laura believes the parents are hiding something. Pawel managed to get something from the house — hair from the bathroom so he can conduct a DNA test.
How does The Woods season 1, episode 3, “You Know Nothing” end?
Mi Ling asks for Pawel to head over to the restaurant as she has remembered something. She gives him keys to Marek’s apartment. Pawel heads to the apartment; he’s then joined by Inspector Jork who asks Pawel what he’s doing here — Jork raises his suspicions on Pawel. Pawel then receives a brown envelope with a photo of his deceased wife inside that says “Wife Murderer”. The Woods season 1, episode 3, “You Know Nothing” shows deep-rooted antisemitism, with the case distracted by discrimination.
