This recap of Netflix’s Emily in Paris season 1, episode 9, “An American Auction in Paris” contains significant spoilers.

The opening

Emily sells the idea for spray champagne to Sylvie (or she at least tries) — “Champere”. Luc thinks it’s a great idea but mostly for sexual reasons. Afterwards, Emily has lunch with Judith Robertson from the American Friends of the Louvre. She asks Emily if the dress by Pierre Cadault could be auctioned for the AFL. Emily reminds Judith that Pierre is sensitive about his image. At the restaurant, she sees a cheeseburger which reminds her of home.

The art gallery

The penultimate episode sees another man interested in Emily as we draw closer to an end with the season.

Emily rings Mathieu Cadault and invites him to an art gallery. Mathieu turns up and Gabriel is immediately jealous. While Sylvie wheels away Matthew, Camille tells Emily that Mathieu is perfect for her. Gabriel questions if that’s the case. Mathieu asks Emily if she’d like to go somewhere to eat. They walk and talk business. She then asks about American Friends of the Louvre and whether they could donate a dress for auction.

Don’t mix business with pleasure

The next day, Sylvie tells Emily that she should not mix business with pleasure. Antoine sends Sylvie a present to try her win back — Luc opens the gift when Sylvie walks off — its earrings for the nipple.

Episode 9 offers irony at the highest level — for Sylvie to tell Emily not to mix business with pleasure is hypocritical.

Publicity stunt

At the auction, Judith tells Emily that they’ve lost their model — Mathieu suggests that Emily models the dress for the auction. Emily walks on to the stage with the dress and the crowd are amazed. Fans named The Grey Space bid a high amount and then shoot the dress with paint — it is a publicity stunt.

What is the conversation?

The next day, news has spread of Emily in Pierre Cadault’s dress on social media and papers. Gabriel checks up on her. At work, Sylvie says this is bad news. Emily explains that Pierre Cadault is part of the conversation now but Sylvie questions what the conversation is.

The ending

Emily meets The Grey Space next day. They apologise and insist they are fans of Pierre Cadault. She visits Pierre and apologises but he tells her not to say sorry. Pierre admits his audience is getting smaller and smaller. Emily shows a sweatshirt with his logo on it — it’s a collaboration between him and The Grey Space. She explains that The Grey Space sees fashion as a concept and they are not afraid of pushing the boundaries. Pierre believes the world has gone crazy.

Emily tells Pierre that he is the original and that The Grey Space respect his work. Pierre tells her that maybe he’s been doing this for too long and asks her to leave. On the way out, Mathieu asks how it went and holds her hand — he suggests that when things are at its darkest hours it’s best to “Make love” and walks off.
