The opening

“Opening Act” opens in 1988 — Abraham has found a tour bus that needs a good scrub as it’s dirty as hell. But the family appears to be going from strength to strength with success and finances. Selena is making it into the top 20 in the charts. Abraham is still in business mode and not allowing anyone to get complacent. He can see the gold at the end of the rainbow.

A stressed-out Abraham

But with success comes stress, it seems in “Opening Act”

Selena wants to go to the movies with friends from the congregation. Suzette knows she only wants to go because Jake will be there. Meanwhile, Abraham is frustrated because the estate agent is trying to sell the family home they are renting — he asks for a couple of months to sort it out, and he also refuses to allow his children to go out socializing while so busy. You can sense frustration amongst all of them.

Raised popularity and touring

Selena and family head out on the tour bus and start taking part in performances. They are starting to really gather dedicated fans now. After a performance, AB talks to a woman who is a keen fan and Abraham warns him about mingling at the club. AB asks how can he ever meet people if he’s always working. Afterward, the band continues touring on the bus; due to the cold temperatures, Selena is getting sick, so they find some heating. As they are constantly doing the tour on a shoestring budget, welfare is suffering somewhat, but this is turning into a real rags to riches story.

Concerns

There’s concern about Selena’s voice due to feeling sick. The mother is not happy and wants to keep on top of that. However, Abraham manages to secure the headline act of a show which is great news for the family and Selena. Before a performance, Abraham is not impressed with Selena’s red hair, and it shows. It upsets Selena. Later on, Selena tells her father that her hair feels like her identity, and she wants to know who she is. She doesn’t want to fake it. Abraham tries to understand, and he needs to let go a little bit. It’s almost like the father can see the light at the end of the tunnel and wants to take zero risks.

The ending

In terms of the headlining show, the opening act is good, and Abraham tells AB that they shouldn’t make the opening act better than them — it’s always a learning curve for AB. It’s a big crowd as well, but Selena manages to keep it together despite her shaky voice. As Selena performs, a producer gives Abraham a business card and asks if they can talk.

As “Opening Act” nears the ending, AB hops into the car with two women; one of them is named Angie. Meanwhile, Abraham buys the house and the other houses next door. He then shows his wife the producer business card — he knows he has hit gold.
