Summary
“Guilt Trip” shows reconciliations, however, some wounds are too deep to recover as the series enters the final phases.
This recap of Netflix’s Zero Chill season 1, episode 8, “Guilt Trip”, contains spoilers.
The last episode showed tensions between all characters, but “Guilt Trip” offers hope for better days for friends and family.
Mac’s father, Luke, tells Mac that he’s doing the right thing keeping up with hockey until he’s sure what he wants. Bear’s father receives a text at the ice rink, and he starts acting shifty, but he brushes it off. Sky and Kayla bump into each other, and there’s a bad tension between them; Sky tells her that she isn’t using her to get to Mac. Kayla heads on to the ice with Elina, while Sky joins Mac in the cafe. Sky isn’t doing well to prove that she isn’t using Kayla by running to Mac soon after.
Trouble at practice
At the ice rink, Anton Hammarstrom tells Mac that he knows that it was his fault that the gamebook was leaked. He knows it isn’t his fault, but Mac still has to deal with his teammates, who still haven’t forgiven him. On the rink, his teammates deliberately do not pass to him. During team talk, the players call Mac a traitor. Anton calls off practice and tells them they need to team build — he suggests laser tag.
Mac’s teammates continue to oust him during laser tag, but he works with Ava, and they win the game. However, Mac is gutted as they all celebrate with Ava and not him.
It will never be the same
Sky tells Kayla that she wants things to go back to where things were, but Kayla doesn’t think that’s possible as she’s dating her brother. However, tensions are softening. The pair enjoy hot chocolate together. Kayla talks about how back in Canada, her friends used her to get close to Mac, and then they’d dump her. Sky assures her that she isn’t going to dump her. Elina then heads over and lectures Kayla and tells her she needs to go practice.
Father and son reconcile
Mac confides in his father and apologizes for calling him a failure. His father explains that all he wants is for his son to be happy. Mac expresses that hockey makes him happy. Luke tells him to ignore the noise. Is Mac telling the truth, though?
BBQ confession
At a BBQ, Mac wants to find a way to get his teammates to talk to him. He offers to go in goal as they play hockey with tennis balls. They all aggressively shoot at him, and it goes too far. Ava gets in the way and reveals that she gave the notebook to Carson because she was jealous. The team apologises to Mac. All fixed.
The ending
Mac chases after Ava and tells her the team will forgive her and asks her to come back to the BBQ. On the way back, her father tells her she can still train for the team. Elina then picks her up.
Mac tries to speak to Kayla about Sky, but Kayla tells him that she’s not just angry at him for one thing — she’s done with Mac putting himself first for everything.
Bear’s father keeps getting phone calls, and he tells his sons that he’s trying to arrange a house for them. However, later on, his father reveals that he’s put a bet on the team to get money for the house — he asks Bear to make sure the Hammers lose — he clearly has a gambling addiction. Bear’s face says it all — he’s upset his father is putting him in this position.
