Summary
“A Life Plan for Two, Followed by One” isn’t the most compelling story in this season’s bunch, but it’s probably the cutest.
This recap of Amazon Original Modern Love season 2, episode 4, “A Life Plan for Two, Followed by One,” contains spoilers.
At this point, it feels like for every step forward the series takes, it takes another one back. While episode four isn’t my least favorite of the season or even the series, it does have a weak story.
Modern Love season 2, episode 4 recap
“A Life Plan for Two, Followed by One” stars talented up-and-comer Dominique Fishback as a young comedienne by the name of Lil. One night, while performing a stand-up set, she sees her lifelong crush in the audience. From then on, we’re taken on a series of flashbacks that show how the two met, how they became friends, and what happened to their will they/won’t they relationship.
My issue with this episode wasn’t so much the romance between Lil and her love interest Vince (played by Isaac Powell) as it was the way it was presented. Even though I do believe that flashbacks can be an effective device for storytelling, it just feels derivative of other, better love stories here. Compared to another episode in this season where flashbacks are equally as crucial, in this episode they feel too rushed.
Another issue I had with this episode was the progression of Lil’s career. For more than half of the show’s runtime, we explore her history with Vince. Then in the last few minutes she becomes a famous comedienne. While I get that her career isn’t integral to the romance, because it’s used to establish the story it deserves a little bit more time to blossom. Despite my issues with the story though, if I’m being honest, this romance is one of my favorites of the season. Not only does the chemistry between Lil and Vince feel so genuine, but you also want to root for them to make it too.
Overall, I think the episode has an interesting message about the importance of timing and patience, and the fact that you can’t put your life on hold for things that may never happen. In contrast to episode two where the two main characters are struggling to find the right time just to spend time together, the two leads here are never on the same page romantically because they always want different things. And as the reader of any book will tell you, once they turn that page, they’ll only ever turn back if they missed something.
