It’s been a long time since I’ve watched a K-Drama series that ends so pointlessly. If they had ended on the last episode, it wouldn’t have made a difference. This really was a disappointing finale that only served to recap where the characters have ended up.
You Are My Spring season 1, episode 16 – the finale and ending
The finale starts with Da-jeong feeling sad about going to San Francisco because she’ll be away from Young-do; there’s a reality that long-distance relationships can be hard, but as the viewer, it’s implied that the dynamic can also make the heart yearn more.
But then the most dramatic part of the finale arrives when Da-jeong learns that her friend Eun-ha is romantic with her brother. In absolute shock, she holds a meeting with both of them, which brings comedic opportunities. We learn that her brother was there for Eun-ha when she hit rock bottom. It’s genuine love to round off the series.
As for Ian, well, his story kind of ended in the last episode in what has turned out to be one of the most unsatisfying mysteries. He ponders if he could have done things differently, and even at one point, imagines being friends with Young-do and Da-jeong. I suppose we will never be able to understand this character, and maybe that’s the point? Regardless, the consensus is that we do not care.
And then we see Ian in his therapy sessions; he’s still having constant nightmares, and he is not ready to go back to work — he’s incapable of dealing with his guilt. But he does have a message for his deceased sibling — “I was the shadow, not you. And it was me also, who clung on to you.” The series ends, bringing to light the full tragedy that crippled the twins.
And this is where the recap ends….there’s nothing much to say about the finale. The series closes with Young-do and Da-jeong, recognizing how they found peace and happiness, and plenty of narration about healing from emotional wounds. Which is great and everything, but if I needed a self-care, self-love lecture, I’d speak to my therapist.
Additional points
- Ju Young-do delivers one last radio show about not giving up and saving lives.
