Summary
Nick’s mistress, Emma, brings further depth to who Nick was as an individual. Did Clickbait wait until episode 4 to properly introduce us to Nick’s killer?
This recap of the Netflix series Clickbait episode 4, “The Mistress,” contains significant spoilers.
After episode 3 focused on Nick’s wife Sophie, Clickbait follows by focusing on his mistress Emma. Det Amir questions her, where we learn that they were soulmates (apparently). A montage of flashbacks shows Emma in bed with Nick, the moment his kidnapping and death got announced on the news and when she got mistaken as a journalist outside the family house. Emma then goes to Det Amir, tells him who she is and brings us to the scene that Clickbait episode 4 started with.
Clickbait episode 4 recap
Emma visits Nick’s workplace, cleans up some graffiti that vandals have written on Nick’s memorial before introducing herself to Matt. She then looks around the place before Dawn tells her she is in private offices. Hearing that Emma is there, Pia chases Emma but is unable to catch up to her.
As Sophie picks out coffins for Nick, she begins to receive abuse. Having tracked down Emma, Pia learns that Nick thought the world of her. Although Pia finds Emma “so sad”, she takes Emma’s number in case she wants to ask her any further questions.
There’s a powerful scene with Nick’s family after Sophie’s number and credit card details get posted online. Nick’s mother Andrea becomes angry and states that the focus should be on Nick’s killer. It quickly turns into an argument over Sophie’s affair, with Sophie’s Mother defending Sophie. The scene ends with Andrea in tears. What makes this particular scene so compelling is that none of the characters are purposely out of line with their behaviour. Considering the events that occur around them, they’re all behaving in ways that would be natural with that character and the relationships they share.
The ending
In her motel room, Emma receives a call. “I’ve been watching you, I know the room you’re staying in”, ” leave town or it won’t end well”. Distressed, Emma panics and begins to flee. But with a car ramming into her, she crashes. In the hospital, she details what happened to Det Amir. Whilst Pia doesn’t believe her tale of events, Det Amir states that his knowledge of other women being involved with Nick adds belief to what Emma has told.
Pia returns to Emma and tells her what she’s learned. Nick has at least 3 dating apps, possibly more, and he would meet women, pursue a relationship and then deactivate the profile after the relationship finished. Betrayed, Emma burns the painting she has of Nick before providing journalist Ben Park (played by Abraham Lim) with an interview.
