Only Murders in the Building season 1, episode 4 recap

After Oliver discovers that his dog has been poisoned, he messages Mabel and Charles, claiming that the killer came for his family. He also shows the obvious note that tells him to “end the podcast.” Oliver has a reaching suspicion at the start of episode 4; he believes the person behind all this is musical superstar Sting, who viciously told him in the elevator that he did not like dogs (to be fair, that’s a red flag). Mabel does her usual research and learns that Sting lost millions from an investment firm that Tim worked for. The investigators decide that they are in too deep, so they get advice from famous crime podcaster Cinda Canning (played by Tina Fey).

During the meeting, Cinda learns that a company wishes to acquire her for $30m, demonstrating how much money is in circulation in the podcast business. The trio tells Cinda about their true crime story, and they mention the suspicions attached to Sting. Cinda tells them to “embrace the mess,” and due to her fame, the trio is easily impressed.

Romance is brewing in episode 4. Charles hears Jan playing a musical instrument from her apartment through his window. He decides to join in and grabs an instrument to play along with her. Afterward, she invites Charles for dinner, and he’s nervous. Oliver and Mabel offer assurance and advice. During the date, Jan wants to go deep and exchange stories — she asks him about his parents and his last relationship. Charles was clearly not ready to discuss his demons, and he struggles to talk about his ex. He suddenly gets irritated, and the date ends early. First dates are hard!

And then back to the absurd murder investigation; Charles, Mabel, and Oliver head to Sting’s apartment with a turkey to entice him. They ask the singer about Tim, and he reveals he fired him. Suddenly, Sting gets panicky and emotional — he feels firing Tim led him to commit suicide. However, he calms down when the trio of podcast investigators reveals that they think Tim was murdered. He’s relieved and decides to sing a new song on the spot.

So with Sting cleared as the murderer, episode 4 moves back to Charles’s demons and his dating woes. He decides to clean up his own mess, and he speaks to Jan at her apartment and dives into his last relationship — he discusses the heartbreak that he endured and felt embarrassed by how it transpired — he’s haunted by it. After opening up, he admits he likes her and asks for a second date — Jan agrees. It looks like this romance will continue to develop.

The ending

As the episode moves towards the ending, Mabel researches the book regarding “The Shore Road Mystery,” which leads her to a diamond distributor website. Meanwhile, Oliver’s son asks his father and Charles about their new podcast. He reveals that Mabel was friends with Tim, so she knows him. He also drops the bombshell that another friend in the same circle was pushed off the roof of the building. It looks like Mabel will be the next suspect!

Episode 4 ends with Cinda stealing the podcast concept with the slightly amended title — “Only Murderers in the Building.”
