This article discusses the ending of The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star, and will contain spoilers.

Netflix’s Christmas film The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star is quite a simple story with a convincing closure. In the end, as always, we want there to be a happy ending to the film.

The film ends with retrieving the ‘Star of Peace’ from the criminal Hunter Cunard by Fiona and Peter and Christmas is celebrated by the people of Montenaro. Margaret’s daughter comes home, Fiona’s exile of community service in a nunnery is lifted and all are happy again.

But towards the end, the complicated relationship between Fiona and her mother becomes evident. We come to know about Fiona’s childhood of abandonment from her parents as they kept busying in their marital problems and had no time for their daughter. This abandonment broke Fiona and thus she never intends to see her mother again. In addition to that, she is quite conscious about the relationships. Whenever she attaches to somebody emotionally, she deserts them lest she has not to deal with the probable abandonment from them in the future.

Peter, her ex-boyfriend and childhood friend of hers, rightly points out this tendency. He tells her to accept the fact of the emotional attachment with people she loves. For that, he arranges a meeting between Fiona and her mother in the same boarding school they had gone to.

Fiona is initially hesitant and furious towards Peter for this meeting. Peter said to her that if she does not accept the fact right now, they will never be met again. Fiona accepts it though her eyes say it differently. Peter parts away from Fiona.

After Peter’s departure, Fiona has some self-realization and she goes to meet her mother in the dining hall. Though initially, Fiona was repulsed by her mother she ends up reconciling with her. They come back to the palace to celebrate Christmas with Stacy and Margaret.

On Christmas day, when everybody is together with each other’s loved ones, Fiona seems quite sad. At that moment, we see Peter coming back to Fiona. Eventually, they reconcile with each other. They go to kiss and at that exact moment, the Christmas tree is lightened up and the ‘Star of Peace’ glows on the top of the Christmas tree. The camera pans to the sky and the north star is seen glowing indicating Peter and Fiona will be together with each other (as previously Peter said to Fiona that no matter what, no matter where he would be with her, whenever she looked at the north star).
