Throughout season 5, we were left wondering why the writers were focusing on Berlin’s son Rafael and his wife Tatiana so much. Flashback after flashback, it became apparent that Berlin’s past was crucial to the entire set-up for the heist of the Bank of Spain. In a shocking flashback, we learn that Tatiana asked Berlin for a divorce, leaving him heartbroken. But, the shock is deepened when we learn that Tatiana is leaving him for his son Rafael. At the time, it was an apparent affair for only three weeks, and Rafael claims he has madly fallen in love. Berlin leaves them both with a sour taste, stating that neither will receive his pension or inheritance.

But it turns out Berlin’s past comes back to haunt The Professor and the heist team, despite being dead. While the gold is pumped upstream to The Professor’s hideout and welded back into bricks, little did they know that Tatiana and Rafael had a plan of their own. The police show up at the Stormwater tank in episode 8 and arrest The Professor and his team, but it’s a trick. They are not really the police. Tatiana, Rafael, and a team of criminals have stolen the gold and buried it under a plot of land. This comes at a pivotal time in the series. It’s madness. It’s audacious, but it works.
The Professor’s plan is in jeopardy, and in the final two episodes, he has a double game to play — to win the heist and retrieve the gold that had been stolen off him. It is a moment in Money Heist where the writers went all out to land an ultimate twist in a grand plan, and they pulled it off.
