Summary
A drastic improvement from the pilot episode. The characters become more believable, and therefore likable. Their journeys seem to head in some direction, plus Camille’s love-life is messy but great to watch.
This recap of Amazon’s Harlem season 1, episode 2, “Saturn Returns,” contains spoilers.
“If you don’t learn from the past, you’re destined to repeat it. However, in Harlem of today, by learning who we were, what the city was, we might get lucky enough to repeat it”. Yet, after the gang attend a palm reader, Camille believes she may be about to make a past mistake. She reveals to her friends that (at the moment where the pilot episode finished), she lost her nerve at approaching Ian. And she then hid from him after causing a waiter to drop a drink. Camille, as a result, can’t help but panic about Ian and the possibility of bumping into him.
Harlem season 1, episode 2 recap
Time for the good news in the group. Tye reveals she is doing a Forbes interview, and it will be a 2-page spread! But before she can do that, she decides to break with up with Shayla (Claudia Logan). And so, she practices her break-up speech with Camille. After Angie turns down a role in Get Out: The Musical, Quinn learns that their (her) rent is going to increase by $2500. Therefore, in a pickle, Quinn speculates whether she should ask her mother for money. To help calm the tension, Angie accompanies Quinn to lunch with her mother Patricia (Jasmine Guy). But to Quinn’s surprise, it’s not lunch but a fundraiser, where her ex Damien (Ryan Love) is also in attendance with his pregnant wife. Angie blurts out to Patricia that Quinn is having money troubles. Whilst Patricia gives Quinn some money, Quinn still finds her mother to be insufferable.
Tye meets up with Shayla. But it becomes clear that both are trying to break up with the other. Although, Tye is annoyed to think Shayla wants to dump her. In the embarrassing exchange, Tye tries to convince the restaurant that she broke up with Shayla and not the other way around. To cheer themselves up, the four best friends go to a gay club. But when Tye quickly pulls Anna (Kate Rockwell), Quinn, Angie, and Camille go for McDonald’s. The next morning Tye finds that Anna has not only left but also eaten her food.
The ending
Next, Camille attends the engagement party of two of her friends, Paul (Ken Allen Neely) and Britney (Nneka Okafor). And, just is Camille’s luck that Ian is also there, with a date! (Mira; Rana Roy). Camille makes a swift exit from the events as Paul and Britney argue over not guessing the same film. But Ian is outside smoking. He reveals that he almost didn’t turn up either, and after a moment of bonding, Camille and Ian kiss. They stop kissing when Mira appears and takes Ian away to dance.
The second episode of Harlem concludes as Camille tells Ian that she regrets that she dumped him. As he’s now back in Harlem, she wants them to give it another shot. But Ian drops a bombshell. Mira isn’t just his date, she is his fiancée.
