At the beginning of Our Beloved Summer episode 3, it opens up with Ung recording a video. In the video, he’s telling the interviewer why he hates Yeonsu. From talking about their dating, we’re learning that Yeonsu wasn’t the most polite girlfriend or person — she was annoying, rude, and sometimes stuck up. But she was also the sweetest person at times, yet only Ung saw this side of her. It’s these moments that keep the audience seated seeing how the couple bicker and constantly complain about each other yet they clearly still love each other. It’s also important to note that Ung sees her in her duality and knows that she can be extremely horrible, instead of glossing over her negative characteristics.

Our Beloved Summer season 1, episode 3 recap

Ung is still unconvinced about working with Yeonsu — it seems like the breakup might have been horrible because even Jiung is trying to persuade him to star in another documentary with Yeonsu. Jiung tells him why he wants him to film another one but he still refuses. We also learn that Jiung discusses how Ung coped with his breakup and realized that he wouldn’t want his friend to go through the pain again.

As for the ex-couple, Yeonsu and Ung watch the old videos and reminisce on the past and the times they had. Yeonsu grew to realize how naive she was (which is fine, after all, she was a younger girl in these videos) and changed the artist’s name to Nu-a. Meanwhile, she continues to bump into Ung at the store where they both shop. She tells him that she’s decided to replace him for her project, only to find out that her boss would pass on the contract if she didn’t get him on board.

In a flashback scene, we learn that Yeonsu wasn’t happy about the breakup, especially as it was a long-term relationship. Instead, she puts on a brave face to appear calm and self-assured but it feels disingenuous as she is hurting and upset about it. It’s an interesting dynamic because we’ve never seen much of her vulnerable moments and characteristics.
