Summary

Stay Close gets to work on its mounting body count as some more major twists throw the plot into disarray.

This recap of Stay Close season 1, episode 3 contains spoilers.

So, it turns out Tawny Allure’s eccentric interrogators killed herStay Close episode 3 confirms this when it opens with them disposing of her body, but they do stop for an impromptu song and dance routine, only furthering the idea that they seem like transplants from a completely different, much more ridiculous show. When the man accidentally touches the woman’s breast during the routine, they remind each other of the “pledge” they took. So, murder is perfectly okay, but sex is off-limits? Sounds about right.

Stay Close season 1, episode 3 recap

Luckily, Jordan turns out to be fine — the man who approached him was apparently a game developer looking for testers and gave him an official letter to prove it, but Megan grounds him anyway. Meanwhile, Ray, who keeps having flashbacks to his time meeting Cassie when she was still a dancer, gives some kids a photography lesson that includes letting them see Cassie in lingerie. He also has a file of photographs from April 16 and has more flashbacks to the fight on that night, which presumably involved Guy, but what exactly happened there remains mysterious for now. Either way, we’re starting to get the sense that Cassie’s relationship with Ray caused things to escalate between her and Stewart, as we see his bald head watching them ominously from afar whenever they interact.

In the present day, Dave’s mother, Frances, calls Megan complaining about a man who apparently keeps sneaking into her house. People are dismissive of her because of her condition, but given what we learned about Dave in the previous episode, it’s easier to believe. It’s also easier for Megan to believe when Frances quite clearly describes Stewart and tells Megan that he was asking after Cassie. Megan suggests to Dave that they should move Frances to somewhere she feels more secure, which is obviously a self-serving decision. She also finds that the “official letter” given to Jordan was a picture of her, as Cassie, ripped from the Vipers flyer, so it seems he was talking to Stewart after all.

Meanwhile, Broome and Erin go to see Simona about Guy, after taking some samples and such from the spot in the woods depicted in Ray’s photographs. They get a list of Guy’s workmates at the builder’s yard, and Broome gets a call from Lorraine asking him to drop off the recorder at her place, which Broome seems very willing to do, much to Erin’s amusement.

Broome isn’t the only one looking for Guy. Ray goes to Vipers armed with the pictures he took that night and asks Lorraine if she’s seen him. He also asks about Cassie, and Lorraine feeds him some nonsense about Cassie having died of cervical cancer. While Ray is sitting and stewing outside the bar, he sees Kayleigh and Bea arrive and head into the woods, looking for Carlton. They try to retrace their steps from that night with the help of flashbacks and make their way to the ruins, which haven’t been taped off as a crime scene by the police or anything, as you’d think they might given they were only there a little while ago. Ray tries to speak to the girls, but they leg it, and he snaps a photo of their car as they race off.

Left alone, Ray continues to roam the woods and stumbles across what looks very much like Guy’s dead body.

After a disagreement at the station, first with a colleague over sharing his desk, and then with Del Flynn over his plans to put up a £100,000 reward for information on Carlton that’ll lead to the police being inundated with useless sightings, Broome heads to Lorraine’s place with the recorder and, predictably, they sleep together.

Broome is obviously a popular man since Megan decides to meet with him too, inspired by the cutting from the flyer. She asks Harry to facilitate the meeting, but she happens to catch him just as he’s shooting up. He makes a call to Broome, but since he’s in bed with Lorraine, he doesn’t answer, and Harry continues to fade out. In Lorraine’s flat, Broome discovers some medication that his sister used to take for cervical cancer — it seems like the story Lorraine fed Ray was inspired by her own situation.

Ray anonymously tips the police off to the location of Guy’s body, and Broome and Erin head out to investigate the scene while Ray himself watches from afar. Harry is able to get through to Broome while he’s there and arrange the meeting, but he has to get there to be present while Megan talks to Broome, and he’s still reeling from the smack. At the same time, the crazy killers are given a new target — Harry. And they’re given it by someone we know — Broome’s young, ginger boss at the police station.
