This article, “who is Anabelle” contains spoilers regarding the Netflix series Archive 81 season 1.
Anabelle, at first, appears to be a cliche. That trope-filled character, the goofy, funny best friend of the beautiful main character, offers some solid comic relief. However, as the series progresses, she becomes a key piece in the puzzle of Netflix’s Archive 81. So, that begs the question:
Who is Anabelle in Archive 81 season 1?
Anabelle is the roommate and best friend of Melody Pendras. She is a free spirit, and she has no filter. She offers Melody, similar to Mark Higgins, a sounding board when things get tough. But she also cuts through Melody’s tendency to tip-toe around tough subjects. When she visits her friend in The Visser, located in the East Village, she finds how far Melody has progressed. She has a tour guide in Jess. She caught her necking with Samuel on the sidewalk. And she smells trouble at The Visser.
What does Anabelle do in Archive 81 season 1?
Soon, Cassandra senses Anabelle is going to be a problem. So, she takes her under her wing and creates her into a fine Spirit Receiver. This happens when Anabelle comes in contact with the mold in the beautiful dark black paint. Anabelle then begins to draw pictures of men and women she sees in the black color, which signifies the “in-between” world many are trapped in (or possibly The Otherworld).
Anabelle assaults some people, including stabbing an officer because she has gone “crazy” from the mold in the paint. She is admitted to Rockwell, and soon, she is drawing pictures only of Iris Vos. This symbolizes that Anabelle is receiving messages from her and she wants out. Later, after Melody is “lost” in the 1994 Visser fire, Dan and Mark locate her — she is still at Rockwell! When they enter the room, she has drawn dozens of portraits of Melody. Anabelle is receiving messages from Melody that she is in the “waiting room.”
The last time we see her, she says she has a message for the boys. They need to get Melody out. Finally, she reveals that Jess is now a nun traveling to Haiti and left behind the tapes recording the fire at the Visser in 1994.
