Jess is an essential character in the Netflix series Archive 81. While she is a supporting character that compliments Melody Pendras, she plays a critical in the show’s plot. The woman on the question who perished in 1994 and shot Dan Turner’s video is restoring. So, this begs the question:

Who is Jess/Sister Mary Cecilia in Archive 81 season 1?

Jess is an adolescent girl who lives in the East Village apartment building The Visser with her mother. She is the gofer of the building. She does odd jobs for most of the residents. Primarily for Cassandra and Samuel. That’s until she takes a liking to Melody. The student decides to pay her $15 a week to introduce her to the residents.

However, she is being groomed to sacrifice for the occult living in The Visser led by Samuel and Cassandra. This is revealed by the end of the seventh episode titled “The Ferryman.”

What does Jess do in Archive 81 season 1?

Jess has a seizure disorder. She has passed out several times and has begun to foam at the mouth. Jess’s mother thinks that she may be possessed. She has Father Russo perform an exorcism on her. Melody stops then as Jess begs for her mom to stop. To come and help save the day is Samuel. Samuel is the puppet master. He convinces Jess’s mother to stop Father Russo’s methods.

When Melody thinks back later to interviewing Jess for her oral history of The Visser, she said something very mature for her age. She asked, “Do you think I can be more? Than I am? Like, do I seem strong enough? To hold a new world inside of me?” At first, this comes across that’s maybe she came to this thought from Father Russo. So, when Samual tells her that they have their volunteer and will Melody be strong enough to allow them to hold a new world inside her, she knows the play.

Samuel is going to use Jess as that human sacrifice. It is no coincidence that the child’s mother goes missing later. Samuel had her killed because he needed Jess to embrace being the sacrifice and hold the world inside her. Later, Melody finds that Cassandra is poisoning and causing Jess’s health issues. How? By putting that strange black mold inside the tea she gives during visits. When she later goes to rescue Jess, she finds Tamara there, who tells her Jess and her mother went to Florida. Melody runs to the stairwell and records the infamous “They took her. They took Jess” from the series’ opening scene.

Melody rescues Jess from being the sacrifice, but she returns to save Melody. She ends up taping the entire ritual on her camera and the start of the fire. This is the last time we see Jess. However, during the previous episode, Anabelle reveals to Dan and Mark that she is now a nun and changed her name to Sister Mary Cecilia, now in Haiti. She gave those tapes to Anabelle in case they were helpful.
