What starts as a secondary character and the defacto love interest for Melody in Netflix’s Archive 81 is Samuel. So, this begs the question:

Who is Samuel Davenport in Archive 81 season 1?

Samuel Davenport comes across as a nice guy in the East Village apartment building known as The Visser. He is one of the first people to warmly great Melody. He catches her stealing mail from a box. Samuel asks her out to local opera production. When she appears frightened, he comforts her. When she needs a key to access the mailbox, he provides one. He is so charming and disarming that Melody even gives him a big wet kiss.

Yet, in no specific terms, it all goes to hell. It turns out he is the lost brother of Dan’s new boss, Virgil. Melody is caught in the standard common performing the huffing and humming prayer. It turns out he is the Dark Messiah wannabee of the Visser cult. He wants to do what Iris Vos could not; bring both worlds together by reaching the apotheosis of his occult’s divinity.

What does Samuel Davenport do in Archive 81 season 1?

Samuel is the puppet master. First, he appears to be the glue that holds the Visser’s residents together. That’s because they are his disciples. He convinces Jess’s mother to stop Father Russo’s exorcism on her. It is no coincidence that the child’s mother goes missing later. Samuel had her killed because he needed Jess to embrace being the sacrifice and hold the world inside her.

However, it turns out Samuel always has a backup plan. He uses Jess to lure in Melody to save her. Mark knows what her would-be lover does not: She is a Baldung and comes from a long line of witches that protect the world. He needs her blood. So, he slices her hand and lets it spill over the Kaelego statue. But, remember what I said about a backup plan? Since Jess is gone, he calls upon his former lover, Tamara, for human sacrifice. So, he slices her throat.

After he performs the seance, activates the portal, and brings on a static electrical activity, we see Iris Vos pull Melody from her world to the in-between. We know the room explodes into the fire, which Jess recorded. We assume everyone died but Melody (and Samuel, standing in the circle) since she went into the “waiting room” between both worlds.

However, he appears to be alive. How? He pulled Melody into Dan’s world in 2021 because Melody made it out, while Dan stayed behind and ended up in 1994. The only way Melody made it into the world may be because Samuel went with her?
