The character of Mark Higgins is the heart of the show who is a secondary character who supports Dan Turner, the protagonist is Archive 81. Why is he the heart of the show? Because he embodies the spirit of the series and defies the cynics. So, this begs the question:
Who is Mark Higgins in Archive 81 season 1?
Mark is a supernatural enthusiast who has a very popular podcast called Mystery Signals. These are not true stories or interviews of some looney tunes that had been kidnapped by aliens from outer space. Well, he probably has a different podcast for this one. These are fictional story podcasts, just like the real podcast that inspired this series. When we first meet Mark, he is performing a podcast like an old-timey radio broadcast from the 1920s. The podcast ends by asking the question of a city worker who had crossed into another dimension.
His best friend Dan Turner is that cynic. He tells Dan he doesn’t believe in that stuff. Mark doesn’t take it personally and became an unwanted emotional support blanket for Dan. He dismisses his comment and reminds him to call him if he is feeling low and down again. Mark is a great guy.
Mark is also a rich kid and very loyal. He helps Dan investigate what has been happening to him, he investigates the things that Dan cannot because Mark has connections. He is also a great sounding board for the unexplainable. Mark is also his protector, like when he tracks down Melody. Even though his instincts are right, she is a woman who stole an identity, he doesn’t have the heart to tell him because he thinks his best friend is tumbling down a rabbit hole of poor mental health.
What does Mark Higgins do in Archive 81 season 1?
Mark is a lonely guy who has his parent’s money and delves into his own X-Files fantasies like the paranormal and the just plain weird. Dan means a lot to him. So, when his best friend tells him he already got his story for his podcast, he is insulted. That’s because everything besides his friend Dan is just filler. He is the one constant in his life that means something. Everything he has done, tracking down the fake Melody, doing research, buying the Crest estate, and saving his life by knocking out Virgil, is because he is his friend.
Dan is touched by this and Mark gives him a hug that is probably a bit too long for Dan’s taste. They proceed to the mansion basement and they meet Melody’s mother, who is a Baldung. She opens the portal and Mark stays behind and waits for Dan to come back. Five minutes later, Melody appears and Dan is gone.
Mark is left questioning where his best friend Dan has gone.
