Who is Carol in The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window?
One of the most unlikable characters from The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, Carol is nosey, bitchy, and selfish. Her life seems to revolve around her husband Scott, and she mentions his name in almost every sentence. She is definitely the character that you’ll love to hate.
Whilst she may not be a murderer, unlike Emma and Buell, Carol will purposely cause trouble for others. She gossips about Anna behind her back, and it could get assumed that this is something that Carol often does. Carol can also get described as heartless. Whilst Anna has gone through a traumatic event, Carol belittles it and tells Anna that it is time to move on.
What does Carol do? (spoiler)
After Anna becomes confused and “takes” Elizabeth to school, Carol is at the school gates, and she instantly passes judgement. Instead of helping Anna, she reminds Anna of an event that night and tells her how important it is for Scott. Despite Anna’s reluctance, Carol forces Anna into agreeing to join.
When Anna fails to attend, Carol calls her several times before leaving an angry voicemail. The following day, Carol describes Anna as “bat-shit crazy with a drinking problem”, which Anna overhears. Later that day, when Anna assumes Carol is trash-talking her again, Anna confronts her whilst unknowingly waving a palette knife. An interaction that Carol is quick to retell to the police when Anna becomes the main suspect in a murder.
As the murder investigation takes place, Carol seems to be more concerned that the police sirens woke Scott up. As The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window comes to a close Carol visits Anna in the hospital. In a shocking move, Carol apologies to Anna for her behaviour towards her. (Although, she does compliment herself in the process). Although slightly less shocking is how Carol quickly leaves to get back to Scott.
