Summary

Suspicion is off to a good start! With fantastic characters and a sturdy story, it’s going to be exciting to see where the eight-part series will take us.

This recap of Apple TV+ series Suspicion season 1, episode 1, “Persons of Interest,” contains spoilers.

Suspicion episode 1 recap

The first episode of Suspicion begins with Leo Newman (Gerran Howell) walking into a fancy New York hotel. As Leo has earphones in, he is helpless to defend himself when he gets attacked. And subsequently, the group drug him before placing Leo inside a suitcase. It appears as though the CCTV footage of the kidnap gets uploaded onto the internet.

Meanwhile, in South East London, Natalie Thompson (Georgina Campbell) prepares for her upcoming wedding that same day. Tara McAllister (Elizabeth Henstridge) drives her daughter Daisy (Anya McKenna Bruce) to school (and rudely steals a car space) before she starts her lesson in which a student, Heather, is late and standoffish towards her. Elsewhere, someone watches Aadesh Chopra (Kunal Nayyar) and his family.

As the footage of Leo’s kidnapping goes viral, Leo’s mother, Katherine Newman (Uma Thurman), hires Special Agent Scott Anderson (Noah Emmerich). He will lead the case on her son’s disappearance. During a flight to Belfast, Sean Tilson (Elyes Gabel) scares a drunk passenger into being quiet. Whilst Aadesh’s girlfriend Sonia (Mandip Gill) panics over his £400 payment to a travel company. Aadesh brushes her worry about an affair by claiming that he went to New York to visit potential clients.

Natalie speculates how her mother, Lydia, could afford such expensive gifts, just as a blue car appears to watch her as she takes out the trash. Tara gets removed from her lesson by the Thames Valley Police (as students record on their phones). Furthermore, when Natalie searches her Mom’s phone, she reads a text, “Has to be today. Full amount + interest. Text when good”. In response, Natalie organizes a meeting with the loan shark to pay the money owed. Although, when he believes they are being followed, he speeds down the street. Eventually, Natalie goes to her flat (whilst keeping out of sight from her husband to be Joe) and gets 2k.

The ending

As the plane is about to land, Sean notices that police cars are driving up. And so, he heads inside of the toilets and completely changes his appearance before he gets a hidden passport out. With his new disguise, Sean evades the police and successfully escapes the airport. Just when Natalie’s wedding is about to begin, the authorities ambush the ceremony and arrest Natalie. And the same also happens to Aadesh.

The first episode of Suspicion ends with Senior Investigation Officer Vanessa Okoye (Angel Coulby) informing Natalie, Aadesh, and Tara that they are all suspects in Leo’s kidnapping. And as for Sean, he “disappears” whilst the National Crime Agency attempt to track him down.
