It’s been a long, hard week since we last saw the rolling hills of Tal’Dorei, but the Vox Machina are finally back. This episode kicks off with a flashback featuring Percival de Rolo and his sister Cassandra at school. In this important recollection, the siblings are being taught by a menacing Professor Anders (voiced by Stephen Root). The writers plainly foreshadow Anders’ imminent betrayal. The episode focuses on this evil specimen, as the gang tries to corner this nasty foe. Percy is desperate to cross this villain off his kill list.

The Legend Of Vox Machina season 1, episode 7 recap

The Vox Machina appear visibly broken from the fallout of their prison break. Vax, the half-elf, questions Percy once again on his recent descent into darkness. Remember Percy actually turned his weapon on Vax in the mid-season finale. Through further flashbacks, Percy attempts to explain to his friends what has actually caused his bubbling anger issues and just why he has to have his bloody revenge. We’re quickly presented with Percy’s origin story as he wanders the streets, deals with PTSD, and then handcrafts his very own pepper-box shooter. To lighten the mood Scanlan is on hand to quip, ‘Yikes, no wonder he’s single.’

Our fearless Resistance leader Desnay (Dominic Monaghan) returns just in time to witness the gang formulating their next plan. Percy wants to be reunited with his sister and they all agree that retrieving Cassandra, the ‘prized hostage’, would be an inspiring victory for Whitestone. Scanlan is eager to please and offers his services. He wants to create an enormous diversion, while the others free Cassandra from the Briarwood’s estate. The gang cautiously agree.

The ending

What follows is another hilarious scene-stealer from our sex-crazed gnome. Scanlan breaks into the enemy’s fortress, of course, via the toilet. He happens to catch Duke Vedmire (Game Of Thrones star Rory McCann) in the middle of a rather uncomfortable number two. The Duke chases after Scanlan and his bag of tricks. Not to brag, but I finally got a prediction right. Scanlan uses his magic potions to escape from the Duke and his endless onslaught of guards.

Scanlan downs each magic potion without a single care, hoping for a formidable power to emerge from the special juice. With each swig, Scanlan discovers a different skill. I won’t divulge the potion’s many powers, but they’re all equally amusing. The distractor rallies around the stronghold and the episode ends with an epic showdown: Scanlan versus the Duke. This is another fun, frantic addition to the Vox Machina saga, with one hell of a brutal finale.
