The Legend Of Vox Machina season 1, episode 11 recap
If you were as impressed with episode 10 as I was, I’m sure you probably binged the rest of the series in one sitting — I don’t blame you. “Depth Of Deceit” saw the gang barely escape their acid bath of betrayal. It was only thanks to Percy’s quick thinking and a naked Grog’s desperate dive into said acid that they managed to continue their quest unscathed. It was a thrilling episode that had everything, from heavy metal to the introduction of Captain Winky and many, many plot twists. In the end, the gang ventured to the Ziggurat just in time for a blood sacrifice and a face-off with their arch-rivals. Episode 11 takes place moments later.
Delilah casts a dark spell and the gang burst into action. This big showdown between the Briarwood’s and the Vox Machina has been a season in the making. We’ve been waiting for this moment for what feels like an eternity, but oh was it worth it. This battle sequence is complex and completely enthralling. The filmmakers choose to split the characters up and focus on the one-on-one action in more detail. A hypnotized Vax fights his sister Vex in an emotionally charged duel. Percy goes straight for Sylas, no messing about, whilst Scanlan fights Delilah, who literally silences the horny gnome and then many different combinations follow.
The standout duel though is between Percy and his sister Cassandra. She’s just double-crossed her fellow sibling and Evil Percy wants to come out to play. Poor Percy has to battle his sister and himself in another breath-taking battle. His contradictory thoughts are visualized with different colored eyes, bringing to mind Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. There’s some clever movement in these action scenes too, especially when Pike and Sylas battle. The way it’s storyboarded makes it feel like the audience is right in the middle of the action, very impressive stuff.
As always, by the final third, the gang seems to be at their weakest point and all hope seems lost. The Briarwood’s are just too strong, they can manipulate anyone they choose and don’t hold back when using these powers. How will the Vox Machina get out of this unfortunate situation? Another cracking episode and the penultimate one of the series. Again there are lots of big reveals, jaw-dropping action, and a cast you genuinely root for. With all those twists at the end, let’s jump straight into the next one.
