Vikings: Valhalla season 1, episode 5 recap

Following the battle in the previous episode, Emma sits on the throne as women pray. It doesn’t take long for Olaf and several others to barge in, with Edmund and Godwin dragged closely behind them. Harald makes a dramatic speech and comes close to “taking” Edmund’s head, but King Canute stops him. King Canute wants Edmund alive and declares that if Harald kills him, he will kill Harald.

Live struggles as she pulls bodies out of the river and whilst King Canute praises Edmund’s attempts during the battle, he soon comes to realize that it’s Emma who has the brains. Speaking of Emma, Olaf pays her a visit. He asks her where her husband kept the treasure, something she claims to have no knowledge of. Whilst he threatens to have Emma sent back to Norway, he saves his true threat for last. He threatens to kill her children. Yikes.

After Freydis takes part in a ceremony, a short flashback shows that she can transform into a crow! In the flashback, her family begs her not to leave as she flies away. So what happened next? And how often does she switch into a crow? Meanwhile, seemingly to alienate Harald from Olaf, Canute informs Harald that Olaf has a 12-year-old son, Magnus. Canute adds that it is him, not Olaf, that can make Harald the King of Norway.

Freydís finds Seer, he refers to himself as the past, present, and future. Once Freydís licks Seer’s palm, he recognizes her as “the last”. He adds that there is no going back, only forward. And that the cries she runs from will grow stronger. He concludes by telling her never to look for him again. It’s dinner time! Canute provides everyone with gold and raises a toast to Edmund and Emma before declaring to Leif that Freydís’s debt is paid. Yet, it’s not all happiness during dinner. King Canute declares there is a traitor amongst them who is greedy. That traitor is Streona. And as a result, King Canute chops off Streona’s head. Brutal! And in an added twist, King Canute confirms that he will rule jointly with Edmund.

The ending

King Canute takes a shine to Emma, and after she voices her concern over her children, he says he will help. In turn, King Canute has Godwin find and save her children from Olaf’s guards. Due to the success of the battle, Leif learns that he now has a strong name due to bringing down the bridge of London. Afterward, he kisses Liv and she hands him the miracle cross that a little girl gave to Leif when he was dying. It appears that the cross has saved Leif and Live from deadly situations, although, Harald warns that strings are attached to miracles.

As Emma sits on her throne, King Canute brings her children. Is an interesting relationship developing between Emma and King Canute? Harald drinks in misery as he believes he has traded Sten’s, his brother, honour for the crown of Norway. Kare tracks down Yrsa, who is still recovering with the healer, and he uses the baby as bait. From afar, Freydis senses danger and flees from her current location.
