Who is Freydis Eiriksdottir in Vikings: Valhalla season 1?
The daughter of Erik the Red, she has three brothers including Leif Erikson. Fiery and headstrong, Freydis is a staunch believer in the old gods and a fierce pagan. Like her brother Leif, she reaches Kattegat as an outsider and has her own reasons for wanting revenge.
Having been raped and branded with a cross by a Christian Viking, Freydis seeks revenge. Her determination to do so results in much of the drama in the first episode. And, as a result, her actions force Leif into the Viking’s war against Aethelred the Unready.
What does Freydis Eiriksdottir do?
During a dinner party held in Jarl Haakan’s quarters, Freydis sneaks into the event and kills the Viking who raped her. As she kills him, she stabs a cross into his chest. Whilst Olaf wants to kill her instantly, Hannkan decides that judgment will be made in the morning. With Harald, who she had slept with, siding with her, Freydis isn’t killed. And instead, Leif pledges his service with the Viking war to repay her crime.
After Leif sets sail on the battle, Haakan sends Freydis to Uppsala. During her journey to Uppsala, a warrior who kills pilgrims attacks Freydis. She kills the warrior, although, this leads Kare onto a mission to find and kill her. In Uppsala, Freydis visits the Seer, and recognizes her as “the last”. When Kare violently murders Yrsa, Kare tells Freydis to give Haakan a message that he will be coming.
With another battle on the rise, Freydis and Harald declare their love for each other. But when Harald takes Olaf’s side during the battle, Freydis turns her back on Harald. After Haakan gets extremely hurt by archers, Freydis rushes to get her to safety. But as Haakan’s life hangs in the balance, Freydis, once again, comes face to face with Kare. They fight to the death, with Freydis coming out on top after she chops Kare’s head off. Despite having previously turned her back on Harald, she ultimately comes to his aid and rescues him from possible death. At the end of Vikings: Valhalla, Freydis is with Harald. Although, it remains to be seen what the state of their relationship will be in the second season.
