Well, I told you that Curtis reserving two grease guns wouldn’t be for anything positive. As we see in the opening of “We Ride Out For Family”, he, Vee, and Speaks are on their way to London. And just in time for the finale!
Netflix’s Top Boy season 2, episode 7 recap
Things, as ever, aren’t going well in London. Dushane’s mother is dying, for one thing, and while it’s nice to have a reminder of how deep Dushane and Sully’s connection really runs — the latter comes to pay his respects and reminisce on old times — it doesn’t change the fact that there are problems afoot. Sully is still suspicious of Jamie and tells Dushane as much, and Jamie’s home life is in complete disarray, with Stef bunking school and hanging around with Tia all day. If there was ever a recipe for disaster, these would be the first few ingredients.
And then there’s Lauryn, obviously. While Jaq tries to find her somewhere else to hide out, Curtis breaks into Jaq’s house — only narrowly missing her — and then goes to throw his weight around in Shelley’s nail bar in a scene that reminded me a bit of the gas station sequence from No Country For Old Men. Luckily, Shelley isn’t there — she’s out with Mandy trying to figure out how to dispose of a body so that Beverly can’t blackmail her, but Curtis scares Naomi stiff, and she tells Kieron, who tells Jaq. It’s becoming obvious to everyone that Lauryn’s return is going to cause problems.
Not that there aren’t already problems. Following on from what Sully told him, Dushane goes to see Jamie at home and presses him about what happened in Spain and why Kit killed Dexter before Dushane could speak with him. Jamie is adamant that Dushane has got it all wrong, so Dushane tasks him with getting answers from Kit. When Jamie does, he presses him about Ats, and Kit confesses the full story. Jamie declares, probably accurately, that they’re both f*cked.
Next, Dushane meets with Curtis at the cafe, and in a tense confrontation, Dushane makes it clear that he has Lauryn’s back and that she won’t be coming home to a man who abuses her and keeps her as a prisoner. The problem, though, is that Dushane obviously isn’t taking Curtis seriously, so he isn’t paying attention when he starts following his goons and monitoring his operation. He, Speaks, and Vee follow Samsi and Bradders into the trap and take the cash there, with instructions to return Lauryn to Curtis if Dushane wants it back.
In the meantime, we get a resolution to the Shelley/Beverly subplot, since thanks to Mandy she’s able to dispose of Ryan’s body and finally, emphatically tell Bev to back off, and a little bit more development with Ruben. He’s ready to tell all, including how Dushane and Sully first deposed Bobby Raikes way back in the first season, but he’ll need complete immunity and protection for him and his son. Dushane finds this out courtesy of Wilson Lee, who informs him that Ruben has fired him, right before his brother Chris calls to tell him his mum has died. This comes right on the back of discovering he has been robbed, and receiving a taunting call about it from Curtis. Understandably, Dushane heads outside and has what appears to be a heart attack.
