Summary
Life & Beth continues to impress with its blend of humor, pathos, and a stellar Kevin Kane.
To open up Life & Beth Season 1 Episode 2, and on the day of her mother’s funeral, Beth (Amy Schumer) goes to the doctor for a checkup. She has abdominal pain that causes her doctor to ask her some intimate dietary questions.
Beth admits her afternoon dinner at six is more like a warm-up. She generally eats pasta all day and night, with a bagel or pizza bagel for lunch. She also has four to six drinks per day for five years. But that’s not the kicker. The guy is concerned if she even chews her food. His recommendation? “Drink less, chew more.”
This guy is worth every penny.
Life & Beth Season 1 Episode 2 Recap
The episode consists of flashbacks to Beth as a teenager. Her father (Michael Rappaport) and mother (Laura Benanti) have their belongings confiscated by collections, and their house is foreclosed on. She thinks of her days playing volleyball and the day they moved into a smaller home.
Even the warm memories of her mom doing her hair and makeup. Beth thinks of carrying her pet gerbil with her best friend, Liz.
All her mother left her was a manilla envelope with a post-it that said, “Kiss from a rose” on it. She calls her sister, Ann, who refuses to attend the funeral arrangements with her.
The funeral director (Hank Azaria) comes out of the bathroom without washing his hands and feels Beth should honor her mother with the most expensive package. He also keeps interrupting their meeting because he must eat while doing intermittent fasting. He is even taking spoonfuls of soup in the back during the funeral.
At the same time, the rabbi tells everyone to follow him on Snapchat (and his flute playing at the gathering after, which will only be available on Facebook live for 24 hours).
Matt needs to stop at a bar over Beth’s objections when they leave the funeral. When they walk in (he goes in first without opening the door), she sees all her coworkers and sister. Matt comes out with a microphone. You guessed it. It’s a flashmob, people!
Matt begins to sing his rendition of I think Bobby Brown’s The End of Time while dropping in little nuggets of making love to her and marrying her.
You read that right.
How does Life & Beth Season 1 Episode 2 end?
Matt then gets down on one knee to propose to her. Beth, very confused, gives him a half-hearted yes, that has him delighted. Beth is understandably confused about his timing, considering her mother just passed away, and today was the funeral. He wanted her to remember this bad day as a good one. Sweet, right? Let me clarify that for you even more.
In Matt’s own words, it’s like when he takes Beth to Medieval Times or on 9/11. They even become more awkward when he asks her to say a few words about her mother and make a toast about their upcoming nuptials.
When Beth refuses, Matt does it, saying how thankful Beth is for everyone for coming and how happy she is they are engaged. But he ends up making it all about himself. He says that Jane once began to thank him for being with Beth. He repeats it.
Beth and Ann then leave and walk outside, drinking the same vodka bottle, and laughing.
