WeWork the company is moving ever closer to rock bottom and that foreshadowing is alluded to in the show’s very own title, they are about to crash. In episode six, Adam burns many bridges and starts that downward spiral he has fended off for so long. What sets this catastrophic descent in motion is a British chap called Cameron Lautner, who sets up camp in WeWork headquarters ready to take on the deluded billionaire. “Fortitude” focuses on this battle between Cameron and Adam, who both want to take the company in different directions.
After another party Adam decides to leave the rainy city behind and moves the family to his Californian abode. The children are taught on the beach and Rebekah pitches her latest fad to her husband. She literally just sticks the word ‘We’ on the front of other words, pitching: WeLive, WeEat, WeBike etc. Adam continues to indulge Rebekah’s every whim with a kind of glazed nod. His last agreement being WeGrow, a hippy style of education. Whilst chilling at the mansion he sees that Uber have pushed out their founder and the warning signs finally become real, Adam will have to fight to stay in charge of his life’s work.
The Board are losing faith in the bonkers billionaire and want to go public, so they send in Cameron to crunch the numbers. With a team of accountants, they manage to sort through the boxes of files in a satisfying montage of organisational bliss. Cameron returns to the Board with a few stray observations, wondering why Adam is spending so much money on surfing and coffee companies. His job is to embarrass Adam, yet the founder claims the Board signed off on all these whacky ideas. The ego battle wages on between Adam and Cameron, it isn’t quite Succession, but there is a fun scene where they vote on Adam’s fate.
Rebekah continues with her most pretentious plan yet, building her own quirky school. Meanwhile, Adam makes a deceptive plot to oust Cameron and his cronies from the business for good, hoping Masayoshi will buy out the other investors. The company open in their hundredth city as well as becoming the biggest leaseholders in New York, more reasons for celebration. Though “Fortitude is just one party too far, as the show’s structure begins to feel a tad repetitive. This may be the weakest episode yet, but it is still exciting to see Adam finally get his comeuppance. With two episodes to go, the end is insight. Hopefully, the series will end with a bang unlike fellow billionaire start-up bio The Dropout.
