From the off, you know that in this timeline, Sir Reginald Hargreeves is up to no good. The monocle-wearing billionaire has a penchant for double-crossing and selfish endeavors, with season three being no exception. We find him running an alternate Academy, where he is very much still alive and scheming. But what secrets does this timeline’s Reginald hold dear, and what significance do they have on our Umbrellas?

The Umbrella Academy season 3 – what are Reginald’s secrets in the new timeline?

In this new timeline, Reginald is the father to seven new siblings, known as the Sparrows. Just like with the Umbrellas, Reginald fostered these children, who were all born on the same day and at the same time. He was aware that they held very special powers and harnessed them for his own gains. This Reginald also bought specific land and constructed two hotels on this valuable plot of earth. His careful planning again elicits his own gains. The plot of land was underneath a portal to another dimension, which would eventually save him and his family when the world ended.

Reginald always seems to be hundreds of steps ahead. A genius of his time, this billionaire industrialist has his finger on the pulse and can apparently predict future events or at least plan accordingly. He was the only person to notice and manipulate the powers of those born on October 1st, 1989. Reginald is also the only person to discover the portal and use this power purposefully too. The genius also appears to know how to stop the apocalypse and informs the gang on how to kill The Guardians and find the sigil. However, there is more going on below the surface.

In episode nine, “Seven Bells,” Reginald kills Luther in one of the most dramatic deaths yet. He asks Luther for forgiveness, and then while they are hugging, stabs him through the heart. This would be a shocking twist in any show, but the writers add an extra revelation. Reginald used an alien, living weapon to kill Luther. This blue, reptilian blade appears to dangle from under his sleeve and then retracts back up his arm when finished. Is Reginald an alien, or has he just discovered a new form of weaponry? The finale may go some way to answering this question.

To further confuse viewers, in the finale, Reginald is assassinated by his daughter Allison. She slices his head in two, revealing a rather unusual biology beneath. Underneath Reginald’s skull is a baffling cross-section, with the villain’s insides appearing alien and blue. He leaks a greenish blue liquid from the wound before collapsing to the floor. If Reginald is an alien or a robot, it goes a long way to explaining his unparalleled intelligence and how easily he could hack the alien computer. Again, this provokes more questions than answers. Do you believe Reginald is alien? What do you think is his purpose? Please comment below.
