Summary

Life’s about to get good, and that is purely because of this documentary. With one-on-one interviews with Shania Twain, the documentary Not Just A Girl offers a personal and empowering look at everything Shania has gone through so far. An excellent watch that proves Shania Twain is an inspiration to us all.

Documentary film Shania Twain: Not Just A Girl is available to watch on the Netflix streaming service on July 26.

It’s been the crime of a century that there’s been little to no love for Shania Twain on Netflix. But that has #NOW changed. And whatever you do, go watch Shania Twain: Not Just A Girl! Before the documentary even starts, one thing is sure, Shania Twain is not just a girl; she’s a god damn legend, and legends never die. But that doesn’t make the documentary any less emotional, heartbreaking, and inspiring.

So what makes me say that? The documentary details many factors of her life, such as the death of her parents, the uphill struggle she had to get noticed in the music industry, and the much published and devastating divorce from producer and co-writer Robert John “Mutt” Lange. Whilst there have been lows, there have been many more highs for Shania Twain. From global hits, three consecutive diamond albums, worldwide tours, and success like no one before her, there’s plenty to celebrate. And Shania Twain: Not Just A Girl does a fine job of doing so.

Along the way, Shania Twain: Not Just A Girl not only shows us the successes; but exposes how Shania dealt with sexism, comments about her looks rather than her vocal talent, and how eyebrows were raised in the 90s due to her being a female artist with a female manager. The overall feeling, though, is that whilst many things could have knocked her down, she always gets back up again.

For the hardcore Shania Twain fans, the highlights of the documentary may come from hearing the demo recording of From This Moment On, seeing personal photos and clips from her life away from the public eye, or hearing snippets of new tracks from the upcoming album. However, I personally found the interviews with Mary Bailey, Harold Sheen, and Jon Landau to be the most interesting aspect. Whilst they each played a major role in Shania’s success, it’s been rare to see them give an interview on screen. Additionally, there are superstar interviews with the likes of Kelsea Ballerini, Lionel Richie, Diplo, Avril Lavinge, and more!

All in all, this is one of the greatest documentaries that Netflix has ever released. Shania Twain has one of the greatest musical careers in history. It’s never been easy for her; there’s been personal loss, tragedy, and hardship at every turn. But as the documentary proves, Shania always rises to the challenge.

Shania Twain: Not Just A Girl is an excellent watch, and if the documentary leaves you in the mood to listen to her music, go and check out the Shania Twain: Not Just A Girl Highlights album released alongside the documentary. It not only has all of her greatest hits but the new track, Not Just A Girl. (And in case you’re wondering, the album also gets 5 Stars).
