Summary
Dong-ha tumbles deeper into the rabbit hole as the plot continues to tangle.
You’ll recall in previous episodes it was revealed that one of the dead men Dong-ha stumbled across and buried in his garden was an undercover officer, and the opening of A Model Family Season 1 Episode 4 returns to that plot point with a flashback showing the cop, Han-cheol, beginning to lose his nerve in light of Yong-soo proposing background checks, and Joo-hyun pushing him to keep at it. It’s an interesting scene to start with and an intriguing idea to play with. Doing the wrong thing for the right reasons is justifiable, but at what cost?
A Model Family Season 1 Episode 4 Recap
Dong-ha, after his experiences towards the end of the previous episode, is considering costs. His, if he doesn’t play ball, might be more than his own life. His family are on the chopping block too. But he has become Kwang-chul’s asset, and that is going to come with some responsibilities, especially since Kwang-chul’s position within the ring is a bit tenuous. Yong-soo is being backed into a corner by narcotics seizures, production is having to shut down, and Kwang-chul is off the reservation.
What we also begin to see happen here is the fleshing out of Dong-ha’s home dynamic. Eun-ju’s perspective hasn’t necessarily been well established thus far, nor have the repercussions of how an unstable home impacts the kids, especially hormonal teenagers, which we see reflected in Yeon-woo’s troubles at school and general rebellious behavior.
Anyway, Dong-ha is given his first delivery job by Kwang-chul here, and boards a train to Busan (you know how that can go!) with a special delivery. It’s a pretty disastrous trip, which isn’t even surprising at this point. Dong-ha’s cluelessness is extremely evident, he’s thrown around all over the place, more threats are sent his way, and it looks increasingly like his only way out of this shady underworld is to venture deeper inside it.
But that’s what we’re here for, isn’t it? There’s plenty still to play for in this twisty morality tale.
