There is certainly no shortage of young adult dramas on Netflix, and The Imperfects doesn’t necessarily add much new to the pile. But this series managed to gain a lot of fans, who were let down when Netflix decided to cancel the series from their platform, meaning there will be no Season 2. There’s undoubtedly a lot of disappointment, so much so, that a group of supporters have put together a petition.
The story has its fair share of decent ideas, turning kids into monster-human hybrids after gene manipulation at the hands of a mad scientist, and using that pulpy concept to explore ideas of identity and coming of age.
Netflix Cancels The Imperfects Season 2
The Imperfects was canceled by Netflix on November 8th, 2022. According to What’s on Netflix, the series was poorly marketed, and this resulted in an alarming drop in performance, with a 64% drop in watch hours in the second week. Netflix has a threshold for this, and anything with a 50% drop early on is considered a dud.
The market is simply overcrowded, and many of the shows that this one emulates — such as The Umbrella Academy — are either better than it or at least have the advantage of existing IPs. It’s also presumably not a cheap show to produce. It utilizes a lot of CGI and, at ten episodes, there’s just a lot of filming, location shooting, editing, and production going into this. If we’re to see a second season I’d expect a slightly reduced season order.
The Imperfects Season 2 Petition
However, fans have not given up on getting this show to continue. At Change.Org there have been over 1,300 signatures so far, demanding the renewal of the series. The description of the petition says:
“The Imperfects is a Netflix original series, it was aired on September 8th of 2022 and while it has not been cancelled yet, it is slated to be. I believe that this decision will not be lucrative for Netflix in the long run. The Imperfects was on Netflix’s Top Ten most watched shows for 4 and a half weeks straight, clearly it garnared people’s attention. On TikTok, all hashtags relating to the show have been viewed by a little over 9 million people! There’s over 1000+ posts on Instagram. Yet the powers that be(of Netflix) still decided to announce that it will be cancelled. The show had a variety of great attributes. It had Latino/Hispanic representations that was not seen in other Netflix shows, it had a great amount of humor, romance, and drama. The show also provided the chance to allow young actors/actresses to show their talent.”
While the arguments about the TikTok reach should be considered by the streaming giant, it is unlikely not enough to sway Netflix (or any other platform). We predict that the cancellation will remain for The Imperfects.
