My apologies to Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, and at one point, Meg Ryan, but Tom Hanks has been America’s sweetheart for decades. In this day of cancel culture, everyone loves him, and no one can say anything bad about that man. His films, for decades, had become event films. While he may not guarantee box office success anymore, his latest partnership with Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis remaking a Disney classic may be the type of family film event we sorely need right now.

The latest Disney (semi) live-action recreation is a magical one featuring Hanks in a supporting role. He plays Geppetto, the renowned woodworking craftsman. The older man makes clocks so celebrated that he refuses to sell them to anyone. He dreams of having a family and asks the wishing star to make the pine-carved Pinocchio into a real live boy. And wouldn’t you know it, the next morning, when he wakes up, Pinocchio is alive, curious as can be, still made of wood, but he loves him just the same.

Written by Zemeckis and Chris Weitz (About a Boy), the screenplay is an adaptation of the 1940 classic film and the original source material, Carlos Collodi’s The Adventures of Pinocchio.
