We’ve had Greek mythology, we’ve had Norse mythology… but how up-to-date are you with your South African mythology? I’m tempted to wager the answer to that question is not very. This is one of the things that first hits you when eying up The Brave Ones –– it is going to revolve around something that very little of pop culture has dived into before, and for fans of mythology in general, it could be a brand new stone to look under.
Reason 2. The living, the unborn and the dead
What goes hand in hand with entertainment centering on gods and divine beings? Themes and stories that venture into realms beyond life itself.
The Brave Ones will explore the living, but also will take a look at the unborn and the dead as part of its storyline that is set to feature revenge as a core element.
Reason 3. Characters speaking their native language
This part, in particular, excites me, as it’s not something that we see too often, but also it suggests that The Brave Ones is not going to Anglicise its mythological elements too much and risk sacrificing what makes that part so interesting.
Reason 4. A concise run
At six episodes, this is one of the shorter runs for a Netflix series. That might be off-putting for people who like to have plenty to get their teeth stuck into, but at the same time, it also doesn’t require too much investment on the viewer’s part. So, if you were to take a punt on any show, that’s as good a reason as any surely?
Reason 5. Akin Omotoso directing
Akin Omotoso is quite heavily involved in the production of the whole of The Brave Ones. It’s great that he’s had such 360-degree involvement in the project, but most notable is his director credit, which comes not long after he directed Rise for Disney+.
