This article discusses 7 films like Do Revenge you must watch.

Netflix film Do Revenge is a thrilling tale of revenge and backstabbing at an elite college-prep high school. Maya Hawke and Camilla Mendes are fantastic as Eleanor and Drea, and the film is filled with both hilarious moments and almost too-real truths about the bullying and horrors of high school. But there’s a long line of high school films about popularity and failed romance that Do Revenge build upon, and it references many of them with visuals and lines in the film. We’ve rounded up some of them for you here, in case you’re inspired to watch them after seeing Do Revenge.

Like For Like – 7 films like Do Revenge you must watch

Heathers (1988)

Heathers is in many ways the mother of all great high school films. Starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, this 1980s dark comedy follows a teenager named Veronica who gets in with the popular Heathers who rule her high school. But things go awry when her boyfriend JD starts killing off students at the school, with her unknowing help. This might take revenge a step farther than Eleanor and Drea are willing to go, but it’s my personal favorite high school film.

Mean Girls (2004)

Do Revenge definitely pays homage to Mean Girls, especially in the scene in which Gabby shows Eleanor the different cliques at the high school. This also features a plot line in which the outsider who becomes part of the popular group grows a little too much like them and has to be brought back down to earth. In this case, it’s Cady (played by Lindsey Lohan) who gets welcomed into The Plastics, led by the beautiful but spiteful Regina George (Rachel McAdams).

John Tucker Must Die (2006)

John Tucker Must Die sees girls teaming up for a different sort of revenge: when three high schoolers realize that John Tucker has been dating all of them, they seek revenge. Similar to Drea’s plan, they find an unpopular girl to use to get his interest. The film features Brittany Snow and Ashanti, along with Penn Badgley in a minor role.

Clueless (1995)

Clueless is a clever adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, set in Beverley Hills in the 1990s. Cher Horowitz is the pampered daughter of a wealthy lawyer and the queen bee of her school. She befriends a new student, giving her a makeover and trying to help with her love life, but her motivations are significantly nicer than Drea’s. Still, it’s hard not to notice the way that Do Revenge borrows aesthetically from Clueless, right down to the plaid outfits.

Cruel Intentions (1999)

Cruel Intentions is another adaptation of a classic novel to a high school setting, this time putting Dangerous Liaisons into an elite New York City prep school. Sarah Michelle Geller, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair star in this tale of secret plans, attempted seductions, and plots for revenge. The way that it depicts wealth and popularity is similar to Do Revenge, in which Drea feels the need to hide her actual background as a scholarship kid from her classmates.

Booksmart (2019)

If you appreciated Do Revenge having an out lesbian character, then Booksmart is another great teen film for you. Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut tells the story of two overachievers who reach the end of their senior year and realize that they want to break the rules and have fun partying. Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever are both amazing, as is Billie Lourd in a supporting role, and Dever’s character is great LGBT+ representation.

Strangers on a Train (1951)

Strangers on a Train is very different from the rest of the films on this list, but since it served as the inspiration for Do Revenge, it felt right to include it. While Drea and Eleanor agree to pursue revenge for each other, two strangers in this Alfred Hitchcock film meet and one suggests that they “switch” murders to fix their individual problems. This thriller might not be as well known as other Hitchcock films like Psycho or Rear Window, but it’s certainly an intriguing watch.
