Who is Bernard in Titans Season 4?

With every new season of Titans there are always new settings and characters, and this latest outing is no exception. But who is Bernard in Titans Season 4? What is his relationship with Tim Drake? We unpack it all here, with some minor spoilers for the first two episodes

Titans has very much outgrown its early reputation as a try-hard wannabe-edgy alternative to the typical superhero fare. Originally conceived as a pretty major killer app for DC’s now-defunct streaming platform, the show has grown considerably across three seasons and multiple streamers. It’s now an HBO Max exclusive and a very respectable character-driven show that is doing interesting things with iconic comic-book storylines and characters.

Each new season has changed up the setting and introduced a bunch of new characters, many of whom are familiar to long-time DC fans. The two-part Season 4 premiere was no different, seeing the gang venture to Metropolis on an invite from Superman, and immediately finding themselves involved in the exploits of a blood-cultist serial killer and Lex Luthor’s end-of-life care. One of the characters introduced was Bernard Fitzmartin.

Who plays Bernard in Titans season 4?

Bernard is played by James Scully, who is primarily known for his roles as Forty Quinn in the Netflix series You and JD in Heathers. He has a couple of upcoming credits in post-production but little is known about the projects at this time. He is 30 years old.

Who is Bernard in Titans season 4?

The Titans meet Bernard when they visit the famous S.T.A.R. Labs, where he is the Director of Special Projects. He acts as something of a tour guide during Titans season 4, episode 1, giving Gar a new toy, letting Dick watch Superman’s interstellar flight through a pair of fancy glasses, and gifting Tim Drake a custom bo staff.

Speaking of Tim Drake, Bernard has an immediate connection with him. In the comics, Drake’s Robin has a romantic connection with an old school friend and Robin-obsessive named Bernard Dowd, so it seems like Bernard Fitzmartin is based on him, with the surname being a nod to Meghan Fitzmartin, who wrote the comic – Batman: Urban Legends #4 – where Bernard first appeared.

Is Tim Drake dating Bernard Dowd?

As of right now, no, but who knows what the future may hold? Given the relationship described above, it does seem like this season of Titans is building toward a relationship between the two young men.

We’ve also seen the beginnings of the flirtation between the two. After the gang leaves S.T.A.R. Labs, Tim wants to pose for photos with the bo staff so he can send them to Bernard, which doesn’t go unremarked upon by Rachel and Gar. This is definitely something to keep an eye on, and with Bernard having a logical function in the plot, it should be no problem keeping him involved in events, giving Tim an excuse to run into him again.
