“The Hand of Diligent” opens in the Serras home, where Danny is having a vision of his mother. As if in a dream, Elisabeth promises her son to never leave him again, but mentions that his “second dad” will.

At the hospital, Earl appears shaken up about the attack on Anna, who’s still unconscious. As Avi’s investigating Anna’s attack, Janine expresses concern for him. She’s worried he might be getting too emotionally involved in the work.

Paul goes to the station to report his son’s vision of Elisabeth. Avi and Janine have fun playing good cop/bad cop with Paul and get him to agree to a search on his computer.

Meanwhile, John Wentworth seeks out Avi and asks for money in exchange for what he claims to be valuable information. The former professor doesn’t specify what type of intel he’s holding but makes it clear it’s important.

Suspecting Brad’s wife of being behind the attack on Anna, Avi invites her for an interview at the station. During her interrogation with Avi, it soon becomes apparent that Marcie was completely oblivious to her husband’s affair with the daycare owner. Further proving her innocence, she doesn’t hesitate to agree to her laptop being searched. However, police do find that someone googled “how to build a bomb” on her laptop. Avi suspects it may have been Brad using the laptop to incriminate his wife.

Earl and Avi interview Anna at the hospital who has since regained consciousness. According to Miss Harvey, Marcie was a very jealous wife who took her daughter out of the daycare because she suspected the affair. However, after Anna tried breaking up with Brad, he became obsessive and started stalking her at the daycare. It turns out Brad was the one who planted the bomb and when Earl walked in and him with Miss Harvey, she was actually being coerced into sex with the man.

Both Avi and Janine are trying to stop an angry Earl from confronting Brad but to no avail. At the Holts home, when Avi and Earl arrive to arrest him, Brad fights back. But Earl quickly overpowers him and stops himself at the last second from hurting the man. The arrest still leads to Brad complaining about Earl’s overuse of force, but both Avi and a reluctant Janine cover for him. She makes it very clear afterward she was not happy about it, especially after learning that Brad has a history of using excessive force on the job.

Now that Brad’s been charged with planting the bomb, Captain Kathleen wants Avi and Janine to fully focus their attention on Elisabeth’s disappearance. The two go to Paul’s workplace, where he claims Elisabeth lost the family’s savings and that she was suicidal over it.

Avi and Janine also visit Peter Haney on his yacht. He insists he loved Elisabeth and the two of them were going to run away together. The man says he wanted her to leave her husband and even claims he would have been happy to help raise her two children. Haney points the finger at Paul, claiming he’s sure that the husband did something terrible to the missing woman.

On the beach, contemplating the case, Janine theorizes that Haney may have murdered Elisabeth before disposing of her body somewhere in the middle of the Ocean. Avi gets a flashback of his father from when he was a child, then says he doesn’t believe Elisabeth is lost at sea.
