We discuss the Netflix series 1899, including the release date, time, plot synopsis, cast, and trailer.
The minds behind Dark are coming back to Netflix with a brand-new series. Two years after the hit time-traveling series aired its final episode on the platform, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese are coming back with 1899, a new mind-bending series that will surely ask a lot of the viewers but give them a lot in return as well. As the title suggests, it will take us all the way back to the 19th century and the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, of all places. If you are not familiar with the show or would like to know more about it, you are in the right place! Here’s everything we know about the show.
Netflix series 1899 plot synopsis
Here is the official plot synopsis:
“1899. A migrant steamship heads west to leave the old continent. The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea. What they will find on board, will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare.”
Our opinion of the premise
The premise sounds intriguing enough, but it is the trailer that sold me on the series. It is both the execution of the premise but also the pure realization of the mystery genre, with tons of questions being posed and not a lot of easy answers. The only thing that turns me off for now is how dark it seems to be, no pun intended. It’s hard at times to figure out what’s going on, and since I’m not watching this in a movie theater, I guess I’ll have to switch the lights off when watching this. And in general, I am not a fan of poorly lit shows. But I will definitely give it the benefit of the doubt.
1899 release date
The series will be released on Netflix on Thursday, November 17th, 2022. All eight episodes will drop at the same time. It already had its worldwide premiere during the Toronto International Film Festival back in September 2022.

The production team
Here is the team behind it all:
- Director: Baran bo Odar
- Co-creators: Baran bo Odar, Jantje Friese
- Writers: Baran bo Odar, Jantje Friese, Emma Ko, Coline Abert, Emil Nygaard Albertsen, Jerome Bucchan-Nelson, Juliana Lima Dehne, Joshua Long, Darío Madrona
- Executive Producers: Philipp Klausing, Baran bo Odar, Jantje Friese
- Producer: Pat Tookey-Dickson

Most of the creative team for 1899 was not involved in Dark. Ben Frost and Nikolaus Summerer were, respectively, the composer and cinematographer of all 26 episodes of the latter, and both Denis Bachter and Anja Siemens were also editors on that show, but other than that, 1899 is coming from a new team besides the creators.
