Warrior Nun is based on the comic book Warrior Nun Areala by Ben Dunn, and season 2 is now streaming on Netflix. The synopsis of the series, as per IMDB, follows a young girl who wakes up in a morgue, seemingly not dead, to find she has developed strange, supernatural abilities. She is the Warrior Nun and a member of the Order of the Cruciform Sword, a group of women dedicated to fighting an ancient evil.

Here is the official plot synopsis of season 2: “Ava and the Sister Warriors of the OCS must find a way to defeat the angel, Adriel, as he attempts to build his following into the dominant religion on the planet.”

Warrior Nun is a thrilling supernatural drama that has strong action set pieces and discussions about faith. Of course, the supernatural aspects are a bit far-fetched for entertainment purposes but it’s important to have those conversations highlighting what truly makes being evil.

The series goes into depth while fighting off creatures throughout, and Ava as a character continues to develop with each encounter. These supernatural shows may have audiences growing tired of the “monster of the week” episodes on regular cable, but the Netflix shows have been able to cut down the excess and make them work better.

The series on this list all have strong characters with a good moral compass, and they have to decide the path they want to go on when fighting evil.

10 TV shows like Warrior Nun you must watch

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)

Sarah Michelle Geller takes on the role of Buffy Summers in the TV version of Buffy the Vampire Slayerbased on the film of the same title, which starred Kristy Swanson. The series is about a young woman, destined to slay vampires, demons, and other infernal creatures as she deals with her life fighting evil with the help of her friends, as per IMDB. She has a very strong support group and that’s what sets her apart as a slayer.

Anything to do with supernatural elements in a television series, Buffy is truly considered the blueprint. Even though the series had 20-23 episodes per season, those monster of the week episodes still held so much weight for her story.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)

This adaptation of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch tale is a dark coming-of-age story.

As per the synopsis on IMDB: Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) gets closer to her 16th birthday, and she must choose between the witch world of her family and the human world of her friends.

In this twisted look into Sabrina Spellman’s life, she isn’t the same character we’re used to in the Archie comics. She also questions the path of being good, while evil creatures are lurking and she has to decide how to move forward.

Dark (2017)

According to IMDB, this series is a family saga with a supernatural twist set in a German town where the disappearance of two young children exposes the relationships among four families.

This Netflix series is a bit more sinister than others especially because it’s set in a secluded location. Whenever children are involved it gets a bit more unsettling and the families question the thought of who is truly evil.

Van Helsing (2016)

By now, everyone knows who Van Helsing is, and he is probably just as famous as Dracula. This series is a reimagined version of the classic story we all know and love. As per the synopsis on IMDB, this series explores a distant relative of famous vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing, named Vanessa. She is resurrected only to find that vampires have taken over the world.

Van Helsing is on a similar level to Buffy and works against forces of evil as well. The gender bend for the television series gives it more of a fresh take on the character and the world. And having a female-led series about vampire hunting shakes up the sub-genre a bit, just like Warrior Nun.

Shadow and Bone (2021)

When Shadow and Bone was released, it took over the Internet. The book series written by, Leigh Bardugo is a wonderful fantasy and many readers were absolutely thrilled that it was getting adapted. As per the synopsis on IMDB, this series is set in an alternate history where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name while attempting to break new ground of its own.

One of the best comics to exist in DC dark has plenty of connections to any character’s moral compass when it comes to going down a dark path. There are conversations that highlight these ideologies and theories which makes this one of the best shows of 2019. It is also deeply rooted in the corruption within the judicial system as it is a major talking point throughout the series.

Stranger Things (2016)

The Duffer Brothers do take us back to the 80s in a unique way as the wave of nostalgia hits viewers, the supernatural elements creep through and make everyone remember they’re watching something supernatural with children making these discoveries. Similar to Warrior Nun they all try to fight off these creatures from different realms.

The series starts off with a missing boy, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) who was abducted by something from another world. His friends and his mother try their best to find him, but once they meet a young girl named Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), they find out that she is connected to that other world. The series has explored the Upside Down in each season, but the Duffer Brothers really laid out the groundwork in this first season.

Snowpiercer (2020)

Snowpiercer is an interesting series because it has been adapted multiple times before but this one moves a bit differently and works as a supernatural drama. What does it truly take to survive when everything goes wrong? As per the synopsis on IMDB, this series takes place seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, the remnants of humanity inhabit a perpetually-moving train that circles the globe, where class warfare, social injustice, and the politics of survival play out. There are many unexpected obstacles that happen throughout this series that send the characters into a frenzy as they try to navigate their own survival.

12 Monkeys (2015)

The concept of 12 Monkeys has always been interesting, as it was adapted into a movie first. The book was written by Chris Marker and has been an underrated favorite for many. The series, which came out in 2015 follows the journey of a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in the present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will nearly destroy the human race, as per the synopsis on IMDB. Now, anything that has to do with a plague is a bit unsettling, but watching these characters go on their mission is very entertaining. And again, they were able to expand the world through a television series.
